Job description

This is a hugely exciting time to be joining the King s Sport and Wellness team at King s College London as we look to begin the next stage of our delivery from 2023-2025, to connect with our community to find their personal best.

The post holder will contribute to the department s mission to deliver unique sport and wellness experiences that unite our members and optimise our people and potential.

This purpose of this role is to share expertise and knowledge to support the delivery of outstanding gym operations, quality fitness services and provide a world class Service to our members. Growing a community and strengthening connections to King s Sport & wellness to help people achieve their personal best.

The gym coach will take a lead role in the day-to-day procedures of the gym, from opening and closing the site, cleaning, teaching classes and conducting programmes and Inductions. Reporting to the Operations supervisor and working closely with the wellness team to deliver services for the wider Kings community.

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract.

This is a full-time post.

Key responsibilities

To write, implement and review inductions and personal fitness programmes in line with the King s Sport & Wellness Gym Experience to actively coach on a range of fitness and wellbeing aspects when staffing the gym floor.

To conduct, write, implement, and review programmes in line with the Active Wellness Scheme delivered across King s Sport & Wellness.

To deliver a range of fitness workshops, events and group exercise classes that ensures that our members are engaged and educated in fitness and their physical wellbeing.

To teach classes on a regular basis in our fitness studio s and communicate with the Operations Supervisor on member's feedback, adhere to the description of the class and modify the intensity for participants when necessary.

To monitor and coach gym members to ensure their safety and that they use correct techniques when exercising therefore providing a high-quality member experience.

To assist in the development of a series of events that brings university community together through the year across the university campuses and in the Centre.

To have a working knowledge of the Normal Operating Procedures and Emergency Action Plans and an understanding of Health and Safety Legislation.

Ensure all operating policies are adhered to whilst in the gyms - being responsible for the opening and closing procedures and ensuring all equipment and the building operates within Health & Safety guidelines as required.

To achieve and maintain a high level of cleaning and maintenance in accordance with King s Sport & Wellness high standards, responsible for cleaning gym equipment and the gym area.

Ensure all fitness equipment maintenance is carried out, reported, and monitored in accordance with the operating policies.

To support the King s Sport & Wellness Management Team in ensuring all casual staff adhere to all operating policies and procedures.

To develop positive working relationships with the high-performing team of Gym Coaches, King s Sport & Wellness staff, and other student service providers within the University to enhance students experience.

To attend and contribute to Team meetings to engage in the review of procedures and development of working practices within King s Sport & Wellness.

To assist in the promotion of King s Sport & Wellness and to endorse the brand identity and values of the department.

To implement the Estates and Facilities Fit for King s values and high standards of customer care to ensure a World Class Service for a World Class University.

Commitment to attending internal and external CPD programmes as part of the Gym Coach team, keeping up to date with new techniques and trends and gaining additional qualifications where necessary to enhance the quality of services to members.

Any further duties, which may reasonably be required by King s Sport & Wellness Management.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Knowledge of fitness facility procedures.

Knowledge of the importance of physical fitness to individual health and wellbeing.

Excellent communication skill across a variety of customer groups and ability to forge good relationships with a variety of departments or user groups.

Experience of working with the needs of a broad range of gym members to ensure an inclusive environment.

A strong grasp of information technology and Microsoft office skills including word and excel.

Knowledge and experience and working in a higher education environment and an understanding of the needs of students.

Knowledge of relevant Health and Safety regulations.

Ability to manage own time and work independently or as part of a team.

Essential criteria

1. Level 2 Fitness Instructor or above on REPS/CIMSPA.

2. Commitment to continued professional development.

3. Experience teaching group exercise classes.

4. Experience working within the health and fitness industry.

5. Experience working with a broad range of fitness users.

6. Experience in a customer service environment

7. Knowledge of the importance of physical fitness to individual health and wellbeing

8. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (written and verbal).

9. Ability to manage own time and work independently

10. Ability to work early and late shifts, weekends, and to work flexibly across sites as needed.

Desirable criteria

1. A good level of education (A-level or equivalent)

2. First Aid qualified

3. Additional group exercise qualifications: group cycle/spin and boxing/boxfit.
