The Office of Training and Fellowships is the central hub for research training activities at UNC’s Institute of Global Health and Infectious Diseases (IGHID). The office coordinates 11 ongoing programs that have collectively trained hundreds of US and international students, fellows, and scholars. This includes intensive training in translational, clinical, and implementation across a range of topics with a vision of a truly global workforce strengthened by the bi-directional contributions of US and international scientists. The institute’s training footprint is anchored by decades-long programs in infectious diseases. In recent years, our programs have expanded across a range of topics including cancers, mental health, surgery, and women’s health. As scientific priorities continue to evolve globally, we seek new opportunities to widen the impact of our program and activities in new and innovative ways.
We are currently recruiting a Program Manager to lead this important office within the institute. We are seeking dynamic thinkers with experience coordinating large and complex programs. The individual hired in this position will be expected to maintain our foundational programs. At the same time, there will also be opportunities for innovation and creative thinking to address gaps in training activities and in our current portfolio. The successful applicant will lead a small team of coordinators and managers, providing administrative back-stopping of day-to-day operations. They will work hand-in-hand with other units within the institute, including for pre- and post-award management. Candidates should have worked with domestic and/or international research training programs in the past, including grants management, finance, and proposal development. We see this as a position for professional growth and welcome applications from early- and mid-career managers seeking the next step in their careers.
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:- Prior experience working in research training programs in the medical or public health fields
- Operational management skills needed to plan, coordinate, and complete projects
- Experience developing and submitting grants for external funding
- Ability to organize and motivate others
- Able to effectively communicate in a cross-cultural environment
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Good writing and presentation skills
- Master’s degree in public health or a related field, with relevant experience in project management
- At least 4 years of experience in program or research management, including with budgets and grants
- Prior history working in an international setting
- Work experience with social media and other communication platforms

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers.
