Job Description

Northern Arizona University seeks an experienced accounting professional to serve as an Accountant, Intermediate for Printing Services, Licensing, and University Marketing departments. Reporting directly to the Assistant Director, Financial Oversight, this position prepares financial reports to ensure an accurate reflection of the university's financial position. Analyzes and interprets fiscal accounts and financial records to be used by department management to promote financial understanding.

Accountant, Intermediate

Financial Data Analysis - 40%
  • Create monthly profit and loss reports, analyzes and monitors revenue, expense accounts, and account receivable activity.
  • Reconcile the general ledger to the Printing Services financial system to ensure deposits and interdepartmental journal transfers are properly recorded and agree to the unapplied payments within the Accounts Receivable System.

Financial Management - 35%
  • Applies incoming deposits, balances deposits, payments, and receipts.
  • Reconcile and track brand advertising and paid digital expenses
  • Diagnoses problems; proposes potential solutions within the goals of the Printing Services, Licensing, and University Marketing units.
  • Demonstrates and applies intermediate knowledge of accounting concepts, university budgeting processes, reporting practices, and application of university and ABOR policies.

University Liaison - 20%
  • Provides a variety of customer service tasks to NAU departments and outside vendors and agencies which may include providing account balances, transferring funds, tracking deposits, account receivables, and various record changes.
  • Assists NAU departments with transaction issues.
  • Work closely with the Financial Service Team to process cash deposits and other financial transactions such as purchase requests and account payables.

Other - 5%
  • Other duties as assigned.

Accountant, Senior

Northern Arizona University seeks an experienced accounting professional to serve as an Accountant, Senior for Printing Services, Licensing, and University Marketing departments. Reporting directly to the Assistant Director, Financial Oversight, this position prepares and presents financial reports to ensure an accurate reflection of the university's financial position. Analyzes financial data and transactions to recommend new accounting and fiscal control policies to improve department performance and improve efficiency.

Financial Data Analysis - 40%
  • Create monthly profit and loss reports, analyzes and monitors revenue, expense accounts, and account receivable activity.
  • Reconcile the general ledger to the Printing Services financial system to ensure deposits and interdepartmental journal transfers are properly recorded and agree to the unapplied payments within the Accounts Receivable System.
  • Prepares, produces, and presents financial reports and cost analysis for Printing Services' key stakeholders with recommendations for change.

Financial Management - 35%
  • Applies incoming deposits, balances deposits, payments, and receipts.
  • Reconcile and track marketing campaigns, operation, advertising, and paid digital expenses.
  • Identifies problems and solutions independently; identify and resolves missing information; and improves existing accounting processes within the goals of the Printing Services, Licensing, and University Marketing units.
  • Demonstrates advance knowledge of accounting concepts, university budgeting processes, reporting practices, and application of university and ABOR policies.

University Liaison - 20%
  • Provides a variety of customer service tasks to the Marketing department, campus departments, and outside vendors and agencies which may include providing account balances, transferring funds, tracking deposits, account receivables, and various record changes.
  • Assists the department and other campus departments with transaction issues and make recommendations or decisions to department management to improve the processes of the accounting team.
  • Communicate with the Marketing department, NAU Financial Service Team, outside vendors and agencies to process and track financial transactions such as purchasing contracts, SOWs, account payables, and travel.

Other - 5%

Minimum Qualifications

Accountant, Intermediate
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field.
  • 2-4 years of accounting experience.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-foryear basis.

Accountant, Senior
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field.
  • 3-5 years of accounting experience.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Accounting experience in higher education.

Accountant, Intermediate
  • Intermediate knowledge of accounting tools, procedures, processes, policies, and concepts, such as preparation of financial statements, account reconciliations, journal entries, invoicing, revenue receipts,and other financial documents.
  • Knowledge of financial reporting in higher education.
  • Knowledge of university budgeting processes.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Proficiency in Quickbooks
  • Skill in writing detailed numerical computations and reports.
  • Skill in computerized accounting systems and applications, such as accounting software.
  • Communicates effectively.
  • Listens actively.
  • Analyzes non-routine situations and anticipate issues.
  • Promotes a diverse, inclusive environment.

Accountant, Senior
  • Advanced knowledge of accounting tools, procedures, processes, policies, and concepts, such as preparation of financial statements, account reconciliations, journal entries, invoicing, revenue receipts, and other financial documents.
  • Knowledge of financial reporting in higher education.
  • Knowledge of university budgeting processes.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. If you are applying for a job that requires a CDL, you will be required to register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and adhere to the clearinghouse requirements. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary

Accountant, Intermediate

Anticipated salary range is $41,421 to $51,776. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

Accountant, Senior

Anticipated salary range is $47,634 to $59,542. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

Benefits

This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System; paid vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. More information on benefits at NAU is available on the Human Resources benefits website. Classified Staff employees are in a probationary status for their first six months at NAU. NAU is a tobacco and smoke-free campus. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Additionally, new employees will begin participating in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date.
