Position Summary

Division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity

The Division works proactively to address systemic inequities through professional learning, community building, advocacy, policy recommendations and organizational structures, while facilitating an integrated vision and shared responsibility for prioritizing and advancing institutional goals.     The Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students reports to the Vice President for Student Affairs and Campus Diversity and serves as one of the executive officers in the Division. The Associate Vice President is responsible for the direction and coordination of department programs/personnel as designated by the Vice President for Student Affairs. The incumbent represents the interests of the Division on a day-to-day basis at the sub-Cabinet level and is responsible for the promotion of student development through a program of co-curricular activities and services to students. The Associate Vice President is also responsible for the quality of the campus social, cultural and educational environment and the student services that enhance the University's academic programs and the intellectual and personal development of students on the San Diego State University campus.

    The Residential Education Office is designated as the University department responsible for planning and administering Residential Education programs and services including those in traditional residence halls and apartment complexes. The Residential Education Office serves to enhance student life and success through a comprehensive living-learning experience that provides academic and personal support, contact with faculty, educational programs, community activities, student leadership development and multicultural learning opportunities. The department is part of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Campus Diversity/Dean of Students sub-division.

    The Residential Education Office strives to provide safe and supportive on campus living learning communities where diverse students are challenged to develop holistically; as scholars, citizens and leaders.

    Residential Education staff members are dedicated to providing curricular and co-curricular experiences to develop and enhance residents' academic success, awareness and appreciation of diversity, and civic responsibility.

  • Under general direction, the Community Engagement Coordinator performs complex Student Services professional work characterized by independent student advising and guidance in individual and group settings. Such advising involves basic counseling techniques and may concern career, academic, learning, campus life, and/or related issues. Incumbents in this classification spend substantial portions of time in advising sessions of considerable duration and utilize skills usually gained in graduate courses in counseling and guidance, human relations, or related fields. This level is further characterized by assignments requiring the application of a high degree of judgment, or persuasiveness, imagination, and professional skills and knowledge in a specified program or service area, as well as a general understanding of the interrelationships and the need for coordinated action within the total Student Services program. This level requires considerable administrative planning to develop creative solutions which integrate approaches across organizational lines. At this level, there is also the responsibility for recognizing specific program needs and for developing approaches for possible implementation to meet these needs.

    This position reports directly to the Associate Director of Residential Education and is responsible for the oversight of the development of educational programming and academic enhancement of the university's residential education program, specifically focused on diversity, equity, inclusion, and civic engagement.

    The Community Engagement Coordinator will oversee the implementation and maintenance of the Identity and Allyship Awareness Program committee and departmental Affinity Groups (e.g. Black Affinity, Latinx, Pride, APIDA, and First Generation). The CEC will collaborate with several offices outside of Residential Education, including the various Identity Centers on campus, the Center for Inclusive Excellence, the Office of Housing Administration, Assistant Deans for Student Affairs, Career Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, Health Promotion, International Student Center, Financial Aid, and others for the marketing, development, and support of these programs.

    The Community Engagement Coordinator will oversee the implementation and maintenance of the Sophomore Success Program and the Sophomore QUEST program curriculum. The Community Engagement Coordinator collaborates with campus partners to evaluate Residential Education's achievement of student learning outcomes and evaluates progress to degree of residential students, including grade point averages, percent of students on academic probation, number of units attempted, number of units completed, etc. In addition, this position will collaborate with the General Advisor and Retention Specialists (GARS) and other faculty/staff to plan intervention strategies for residential sophomores.

    The Community Engagement Coordinator will participate as appropriate in various Residential Education programs and will carry out other duties as assigned by the Associate Director and/or Executive/Director of Residential Education.

    This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

    The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

    Education and Experience

    Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.

    A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

    Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.

    Specialized Skills
  • Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Counseling, College Student Personnel, or a related field.
  • Three to five years of progressively responsible experience in a residential education environment.

  • Knowledge and facilitation experience of diversity, equity, and inclusion training.
  • Experience supporting and working with diverse student populations in a large urban university setting.
  • Experience working with and understanding developmental needs of sophomore/second-year students.
  • Experience utilizing and developing on-line training tools.
  • Knowledge of the theories, practices, and trends of Student Affairs.
  • Knowledge of how first-year experience programming and living-learning communities relate to the educational mission of the University.
  • Ability to solicit and facilitate support and cooperation of faculty, administration, staff, and students throughout the University in implementing programs.
  • Understanding of course registration technology and academic policies governing testing, general education, graduation, and major requirements for each college.
  • Knowledge of other academic programs and how they interface with the Integrated Curriculum such as: the Educational Opportunity Program, Honor's Program, MESA program, Commuter Success Pathways, and majors with structured programs, athletes, etc.
  • Knowledge of advanced statistical and research methods. Ability to prepare reports which reflect critical analysis of evaluation results and which project possible impact of the program.
  • Ability to read transcripts and determine appropriate student course levels.
  • Knowledge of student development theory, especially as it applies to academic success, career development, service learning, diversity education, and moral and civic development.
  • Ability to define goals of the program and to establish long-range objectives to meet those goals.
  • Knowledge of university, housing and residential education policies and procedures.
  • Must possess a high degree of initiative and ability to work independently in complex situations. Must possess demonstrated ability to make appropriate decisions as they relate to the day-to-day programmatic functions of the residence halls.
  • Counseling skills in human relations, particularly in student development, conflict resolution, crisis management, family relations, and group dynamics.
  • Ability to interact effectively with persons with hostile reactions.
  • Must be able to effectively navigate the inner workings of the large university in order to accomplish tasks within a bureaucratic system.
  • Ability to utilize a Macintosh personal computer for writing reports and storing information and data for departmental use.
  • Knowledge of various forms of budget development. Demonstrated fiscal responsibility.
  • Ability to plan, develop and conduct training seminars, workshops and retreats.
  • Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability in order to direct, organize, and coordinate committees to accomplish projects in an effective and timely manner.
  • Willingness to attend training seminars, workshops, and conferences in order to develop professionally.
  • A high degree of creativity, originality and innovation in the development of training and orientation programs.
  • Ability to produce brochures and other promotional materials to effectively market the programs to residents and staff.
  • Must have the ability to develop and co-teach University Seminar classes.

  • Compensation and Benefits

    Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $5,025 per month.

    Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

    CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,025 - $7,159 per month.
