Research Specialist
We are seeking a Research Specialist who will work in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and will interface with members of this and other labs in the Division. The position will utilize a solid foundation in basic laboratory principles and techniques associated with molecular and cell biology to perform the required tasks. A qualified applicant should be capable of exercising independent judgment while participating in the planning of experiments and evaluating results. When needed, he or she will also provide training to other individuals who may be assigned to the laboratory on a regular or temporary basis.

The Research Specialist will work in a laboratory which focuses on experimental models of pneumonia in mice and seeks to understand the role of pro-repair immune cells in resolution of lung inflammation.

The Research Specialist will utilize a solid foundation in basic laboratory techniques to maintain all animal protocols, mouse colonies, laboratory equipment, reagent inventories, and assist in routine experimental work like experimental animal models of pneumonia and cell culture of immune cells. The work will also involve preparing and maintaining cell lines stably with overexpressed or knock-downed target genes. The Research Specialist has experience with cell handling and is capable of exercising independent judgement while participating in the planning of experiments and evaluating and interpreting results.




Specific Duties & Responsibilities
  • The Research Specialist will participate in planning studies and evaluating test results, utilizing detailed knowledge of research laboratory procedures and practices, involving primary cells, cultured cell lines and animal models.
  • Maintain breeding colony of multiple mouse strains, including record keeping and genotyping.
  • Inject animals and harvest primary tissue specimens according to protocols.
  • Flow cytometry analysis of lung immune cells.
  • Basic cell culture work including isolation and culture of primary cells, maintenance of immortalized cell lines and cell counting.
  • Molecular Biology techniques like western blot, protein purification, RNA/ DNA extraction, western blotting, ELISA.
  • Monitors inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Assist with organizing materials for publication or presentation.
  • Aid manager with laboratory support related tasks and biosafety adherence.




Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Computer literacy, specifically Microsoft Office and Prism.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks independently.
  • Highly organized and motivated.




Physical Requirements
  • Sitting in normal seated position for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to use a keyboard and move about.
  • Ability to see and hear within normal parameters.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • One year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
