Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The College of Arts & Sciences consists of seventy-one academic departments, curricula, programs, centers, and institutes. The College of Arts & Sciences is administered by the Dean of the College, and is divided into four divisions, which are overseen by four Senior Associate Deans. The College of Arts & Sciences is administered by the Dean of the College, Professor in the Department of Music, and is divided into four divisions, which are overseen by four Senior Associate Deans. All academic departments and curricula are assigned to one of the following four divisions Fine Arts and Humanities, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Social Sciences and Global Programs and Undergraduate Education. These Senior Associate Deans, along with the Senior Associate Dean for Operations & Strategy, Senior Associate Dean for Development, Senior Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Associate Dean for Research & Innovation, and the Director of Communications for the College, all report to the Dean. The Office of the Dean is responsible for the administration and operations of the College under the Office of the Provost.

During its 200+ year history, the College has grown and thrived and is now numbering more than 1,000 faculty teaching over 17,000 undergraduate and 2,400 graduate students. College programming resides in 76 buildings, many of them within the historic heart of the campus, covering 1.5 million assignable square feet. Our faculty includes distinguished scholars, artists, scientists, and performers with international reputations. All are teachers as well as leaders in their fields of intellectual and artistic endeavor. Eighty-one percent of upper-class students choose a major in the College. Eighty-seven percent of the credit hours are taught in the College and there are around fifty different undergraduate degrees offered. Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Interdisciplinary Studies, Bachelor of Science (B.S.), Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.FA), and Bachelor of Music (B.M.) degrees are offered. Many of these academic programs also allow students to minor at the Bachelor’s level as well. Nearly all of the departments and curricula also offer masters and doctoral degrees through the Graduate School.

Position Summary:

This position is located in the College of Arts and Sciences Deans Office. The Program Manager reports to the Senior Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion within the College of Arts and Science’s Dean’s Office and serves in key roles for advancing the College’s initiatives for diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). The Program Manager manages the major activities associated with the College’s DEI Strategic plan, monitors data and trends in DEI within higher education, and supports the day-to-day operations for DEI initiatives. The Program Manager also plays a key role in assisting the Dean’s Office in strengthening its partnerships, relationships and support of units, faculty and staff in the College.
This individual should be highly organized; able to work independently, yet collaboratively; exhibit effective management and problem-solving skills; preferably have experience reviewing and analyzing sensitive quantitative and qualitative data; communicate effectively with faculty and staff and primary stakeholders; and identify, plan, and implement creative solutions to advance the DEI work of the Dean’s Office. The individual should be knowledgeable of work to advance diversity, equity and inclusion, preferably within higher education.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

* Coursework in a relevant social science, humanities or education field;
* Knowledge of trends in diversity and inclusion especially in higher education.
* Ability to lead and manage complex collaborative projects; think strategically, critically, creatively, and plan.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate openly and respectfully around sensitive topics, sometimes to large audiences
* Ability to work well with individuals at all levels of the organization especially administration, faculty and staff
* Ability to gather, interpret and communicate data. Experience working with qualitative and quantitative data is preferred.
* Proficiency in writing and proofing documents and a precise command of grammar, punctuation and spelling.
* Excellent organizational skills, managing multiple work streams and prioritizing responsibilities and activities with attention to detail.
* Accuracy and attention to details.
* Understanding of, and ability to uphold, the confidentiality of highly sensitive information.
* Openness and willingness to the thoughts and opinions of others and openness to change
* Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
* Ability to design professional quality materials for public distribution and presentation.

Master’s degree in higher education, social science or other related field.

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers. Sports and athletic programs: UNC is an NCAA Division I school with 28 varsity teams. Technological facilities: Students find multiple uses for Carolina's state-of-the-art technological resources. The MetaLab oversees the development of SunSITE, one of the world's busiest digital library and electronic publishing projects.

Students may open e-mail accounts, and many use campus computer resources to construct personal Web pages. Students in residence halls have hardwired network connections to the Internet and cable television in their rooms. At the ATN Training center, students may take classes on software packages and utilities. Computer labs are available for student use all over campus.

Carolina Computing Initiative: Beginning with the freshman class of 2000, undergraduates must purchase laptop computers. The University has arranged for IBM to offer computers at excellent prices.
