The Planning, Budget & Finance Office provides strategic and operational advice on the financial and budget management of the Faculty, as well as internal institutional and Faculty research data and business support services to all of the Faculty’s units. The Office models, plans, and implements the Faculty’s operating budget and provides Faculty-wide support and advice on the management of research, restricted and trust funds; financial analyses and forecasting; strategic planning and budget analysis; policy compliance and develops and delivers finance and business training seminars for A&S academic administrators and administrative staff.

Your opportunity:

Reporting to the Director, Faculty Budget and Finance, you will be responsible for acting as a key financial and information resource to the Faculty’s business officer community by advising academic units on financial best practices in regards to operating budgets, HRIS and FIS reporting financial forecasting, budget implementation, academic salary increases as well as various other ad-hoc issues.

The Financial Officer, Base Budget and Academic Appointments will have a broad range of duties in budgeting, financial reporting and data analysis supporting senior management decision making for all continuing and contractual academic appointments in the Faculty. Other specific responsibilities include, generating reports focused on the academic portfolio, monitoring, and coordinating the transfer of funding to Faculty Proviostial and tri-campus contracts and agreements, as well as preparing, implementing, and auditing Faculty budget.

This role is currently eligible for a hybrid work arrangement, pursuant to University policies and guidelines, including but not limited to the University of Toronto’s Alternative Work Arrangements Guideline.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Overseeing the financial management of budgets that include strategic planning, analysis and forecasting
  • Forecasting and planning financial activities incorporating budgets with multiple sources of revenue and/or recoveries.
  • Collecting audit information
  • Analyzing complex statistical reports and/or financial information for management decision-making.
  • Implementing plans and process improvements for financial administration activities.
  • Implementing plans and process improvements for financial administration activities.
  • Advising staff on accounting practices and University financial policies and procedures.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, in finance, economics, computer science or other related field, and enrolment in a recognized accounting program or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum five (5) years recent and related experience, in an accounting position within a complex organization preferably within an educational/University environment.
  • Demonstrated experience and full knowledge of general accounting principles, collective agreements or other related financial policies and procedures.
  • Experience in finance modeling, budget control, forecasting and the preparation of financial reports and analysis.
  • Experience conducting financial trend analysis and proposing effective strategies.
  • Demonstrated experience with SAP-based systems, specifically financial information systems.
  • Experience working with and developing databases, analyzing financial data and statistics, and producing complex reports.
  • Advanced skills of Microsoft Excel and other MS Office software (Word, Access, SharePoint, and PowerPoint.)
  • Strong analytical skill with an aptitude for numbers and details.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to multi-task and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to work with complex and/ or technical information (e.g. financial statements).
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.


Assets (Nonessential):

  • Thorough understanding of the University’s budget, financial and administrative policies.
  • Experience working with the University’s Financial Information System (FIS) and Human Resources Information System (HRIS) or other related financial and payroll systems.
  • Intermediate developer of Tableau Software.
