SUMMARY STATEMENT
Upward Bound Summer Academy Instructors are part-time, temporary employees who will design and deliver lessons for a 6-week Summer Academy. Participants in the Upward Bound Summer Academy are given a direct opportunity to increase awareness, learn to respect people of diverse cultural/ethnic backgrounds, build academic skills, explore college and career options, and earn high school elective credit.
Instructors will be responsible for designing and developing lessons and supporting demo and lab applications that align with Washington County Public School competencies and learning objectives during the spring of 2023.
The Upward Bound Summer Academy will begin on June 20, 2023 and end on July 27, 2023. Instructor hours will be between 8:00am and 1:00pm twice a week on either Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays and one Friday make up either (6/23 or 7/7) on the campus of HCC.
Instructors will have an opportunity to teach courses to students placed in two learning levels. In addition to developing and delivering lessons in the core subject area, Summer Instructors will be responsible for course implementation, preparation, evaluation, data collecting, and grading.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
The Upward Bound Summer Academy Instructors report to the Upward Bound Program Coordinator and work closely with the Upward Bound Advising and Assessment Specialist and WCPS supervisors.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
The Upward Bound Summer Academy Instructor will complete the following tasks:
1. Attend meetings with the Upward Bound (UB) Coordinator and WCPS staff to discuss course development and to ensure curricular flow to subsequent levels. Work collaboratively with program staff and WCPS supervisors to coordinate curriculum development during spring 2023.2. Provide updated pre-college curriculum by June 9, 2023 for the authorization and validation of WCPS elective credit.
3. Maintain a knowledge base of current educational issues and trends in research and implementing when appropriate.
4. Develop student learning outcomes for UB Summer Academy learning levels A and B for one of the following subjects: mathematics, reading and writing, world languages, or lab science. Correlate and align Common Core State Standards with new pre-college curricula where applicable.
5. Prepare, maintain, and inventory course materials utilized during the UB Summer Academy.
6. Design and develop compelling curriculum content and teaching aids to supplement student learning. Include teaching methods and intervention strategies rooted in a skill-based or problem-based approach.
7. Develop and write valid assessments including a pre-test, a post-test, and rubrics or answer keys for the Summer Academy pre-college courses. Assist in the collection and communication of student assessment data.
8. Maintain an accurate attendance record of every class meeting and ensure that attendance records are completed, tabulated, and reported to the Coordinator.
9. Work closely with the UB Coordinator and Advising/Assessment Specialist, reporting on a weekly basis about student needs and progress. Hold meetings as necessary to discuss student progress.
10. Evaluate and prepare reports of student progress, communicating concerns or praises with UB staff and/or the parent/legal guardians when appropriate.
11. Administer student pre-test, post-test, student survey and/or evaluation of program activities.
12. Provide academic support to students during the 6-week summer academy, including before-and-after-class tutoring.
13. Provide leadership to students in exploring colleges and career pathways.
14. Participate in the end-of-program achievement awards reception on July 20, 2023.
15. Adhere to established TRiO Upward Bound policies and procedures.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Must be a Washington County Public School teacher with a Bachelor’s degree in specific academic discipline or secondary education required; Secondary Teaching Certification in specific academic discipline required; a minimum of two years teaching experience in appropriate content area preferred; knowledge of state and national education standards preferred; experience working with low-income or potential first-generation college students a plus.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Excellent interpersonal and verbal skills; positive written communication skills; proficiency in computer applications; ability to work independently and accurately; ability to maintain confidentiality; ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with students and others of diverse backgrounds.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Predominantly classroom (or laboratory) environment with the potential for student interruptions. Additional environments may include office, campus/school events, field trips. Minimal lifting is required for this position – will need to carry materials or supplies needed.
