Position Summary:

The Department of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering (OME) at Florida Atlantic University (FAU, www.fau.edu/engineering/ome/) is inviting applications for an assistant professor tenure-track position in the broad areas of naval architecture and naval engineering, maritime autonomy and robotics, offshore engineering, resilient ocean/coastal structures, and marine renewable energy. Applications in the area of aerospace engineering will be also considered.


Specific areas of interest include marine hydrodynamics, marine control systems, fluid/wave-structure interactions, autonomous vehicles, instrumentation and sensing, coastal and offshore structures, deep sea platforms, and offshore wind and marine hydrokinetic energies. Additional areas of interest in aerospace include aeroelasticity, aerodynamics, propulsion, combustion, aerospace materials and structures, aeroacoustics and aerospace control systems.

The Department of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering (OME) at FAU has a student body of over 500 undergraduate and 80 graduate students. The Ocean Engineering program was initiated in 1965 as the first undergraduate ocean engineering program in the country. Today, in addition to the Boca Raton facilities, the program extends to the ocean-side SeaTech research and education facility in Dania Beach, Florida, and includes BS, MS and PhD degree programs. PhD programs include those with majors in Ocean Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering with Aerospace Engineering Concentration, and Mechanical Engineering with Neuro-engineering Concentration. If an applicant with aerospace background is selected, it is desired that they help grow the aerospace engineering concentration within the mechanical engineering major by teaching and conducting research in this area. The FAU College of Engineering and Computer Science is in the top three fastest progressing engineering colleges in the nation (US News and World Report Rankings 2020-2022) and is internationally recognized for cutting-edge research and education in the areas of computer science, artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics, computer engineering, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering and bio-robotics, civil, environmental and geomatics engineering, mechanical engineering, and ocean engineering. The College also utilizes additional institutional research resources through fellow appointments of its faculty in four University Institutes of research excellence/pillars, namely, the Institute for Sensing and Embedded Network Systems Engineering (I-SENSE), the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (HBOI), the Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute (I-BRAIN), and the Institute for Human Health and Disease Intervention (I-HEALTH). The FAU College of Engineering and Computer Science offers degrees with a modern twist that bear specializations in areas of national priority such as AI, cybersecurity, internet-of-things, transportation and supply chain management, and data science. Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must have an earned PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Ocean Engineering or a closely related field. Applicants should demonstrate the potential to establish a high-quality extramurally funded research program, excel at teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, work collaboratively with colleagues as a team member to advance the program, and demonstrate skill in understanding of cultural differences.
