Multiple Faculty Positions in Biostatistics

The Department of Biostatistics at the Boston University School of Public Health invites applications for multiple faculty positions with start dates expected to be in Summer/Fall 2023. Preference will be given to the Assistant Professor level, but exceptional candidates at the Associate or Full Professor level will also receive serious consideration. Academic rank will be commensurate with experience. We are looking for candidates who will lead innovative biostatistical scholarship, work collaboratively with biomedical researchers, and teach courses in our graduate degree programs. We welcome applicants with expertise in all areas of biostatistics but are particularly interested in those with demonstrated experience in clinical trials, machine learning, and big data analytics.

The Department of Biostatistics believes that the cultural and social diversity of our faculty, staff, and students is vitally important to the distinction and excellence of our research and academic programs. We seek a colleague who will support our institutional commitment to ensuring that BU is inclusive, equitable, diverse, and a place where all constituents can thrive. BU is an AAU institution with a rich tradition dedicated to inclusion and social justice. We are proud to be the first American university to award a Ph.D. to a woman, and we continue our tradition of educating a diverse and talented student body. The Boston University School of Public Health pursues a detailed plan for fostering a diverse and inclusive community recognizing that diversity of experience deepens the intellectual endeavor.

The Department of Biostatistics is comprised of approximately 30 faculty, who are internationally recognized for their innovation in research and scholarship in a diverse range of areas of biostatistics including statistical genetics, clinical trials, surveillance, longitudinal studies, Bayesian statistics and risk prediction. Biostatistics faculty play leading roles in several large observational studies such as the renowned Framingham Heart Study, the Million Veterans Project and the Risk Evaluation & Education for Alzheimer’s Disease study. They actively collaborate with researchers at Boston Medical Center, New England’s largest safety net hospital, with a mission to serve underserved populations.

The department has large and successful graduate programs, including a PhD and MS in Biostatistics, an MS in Applied Biostatistics, and a Summer Institute in Biostatistics (SIBS) for undergraduates.

Required Skills

Candidates should hold a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in biostatistics, data science, or closely related field of study. Successful applicants should have a demonstrated research record for their career stage, interest and ability in teaching, excellent oral and written communication skills, and a strong desire to work in a team setting. Strong programming skills are required in R and/or SAS.

Applicants should provide their curriculum vitae; a cover letter; a research statement describing their research interests and previous experience; a teaching statement; and a diversity statement that details how their research and mentoring will promote diversity and inclusivity at our school; and three letters of reference at: https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/23461.

Application review will begin mid-January 2023 and continue until the positions are filled.

Please note all newly hired staff and faculty will need to be in compliance with Boston University’s COVID-19 Vaccination and Booster Requirement within 30 days of date of hire. You must upload your vaccine documentation or request a medical or religious exemption (instructions). The Difference Is Our DNA

What compelled the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to award Boston University a grant to fight newborn mortality in Zambia? Why did Martin Luther King, Jr. adopt BU as a place where he could hone his message of justice and equality? And what is the catalyst that prompts 32,557 students from 135 countries to call BU their home every semester? It’s in our DNA: an inherent desire in each of our students, faculty, and staff to vigorously and dauntlessly pursue knowledge—and embrace the unlimited possibilities that come with it.

A Community Unlike Any Other

As you can see below, it takes people, ideas, and a little luck (Boston, you’re our town) to make BU what it is today: one of the most dynamic universities in the world.

Celebrated thinkers: On any given day, students will find themselves mesmerized by Nobel Prize winners, a poet laureate, and the first biomedical engineer ever to receive a MacArthur Foundation “Genius Award,” among others.

Extraordinary teaching: When a classroom starts to percolate with new ideas, it’s because our faculty of scholars and accomplished practitioners know how to ignite students’ imaginations. That’s why we reward our best teachers with BU’s most prestigious honor: The Metcalf Cup and Prize.

Groundbreaking research: With faculty dedicated to a creative, interdisciplinary approach to problem solving, BU has become a leading global research institution—propelled forward by over $350 million a year in sponsored program revenue.

World-class students: Elite students from all 50 states and 135 countries pursue higher education on BU campuses in Boston and at programs in L.A., D.C., and more than 30 other cities on six continents.

A city within a city: Today, 80% of our undergrads live on campus, which could explain the 525 student activity groups alone.

The greatest college town in the world: Boston. ’Nuff said.
