Description:

In the Facilities Management department, we take pride in our buildings and grounds that help provide a welcoming, clean and safe environment for our students, faculty and staff.

Reporting to the Manager, Grounds & Caretaking Operations, the Assistant Manager, Facilities Operations and liaising regularly with the Manager, Maintenance and Carpentry, is responsible for overseeing the provision of caretaking and grounds for all the buildings on the Scarborough campus of the University of Toronto. The Assistant Manager has full managerial authority for the two units in the portfolio, and manages more than 14 staff.

The Assistant Manager manages the operation by ensuring the provision of a consistent level of services and the maintenance of an appropriate standard of cleanliness for a large, 24/7 operation The duties include: hiring, training, managing performance expectations and concerns with the team members; reviewing and preparing staff work schedules; maintaining staff time and attendance records; reviewing work schedules and documenting project completeness; performing quality checks and determining action to resolve any deficiencies, maintaining accurate records of supplies and equipment on-hand and other duties as assigned.

The Assistant Manager works with the Manager, Caretaking & Grounds Operations on cleaning, grounds and recommends long-term staffing and other needs necessary to meet the demand for services on an expanding campus.

Qualifications

Education: Post-secondary degree or certificate in a relevant field or equivalent combination of education and experience. BOMA (Building Owners and Managers' Association) designation an asset.

Experience: Five (5) years’ progressively responsible experience in providing caretaking, maintenance and grounds services. Knowledge of the Building Code is an asset. Demonstrated experience managing a large workforce in a unionized environment. Experience interpreting and applying collective agreements and sound knowledge of hazardous chemicals, WHMIS regulations, Occupational Health and Safety Act. Experience working with an online work order system and Kronos time and attendance management system are definite assets.

Skills: Must have excellent oral and written communication skills; excellent organizational skills; demonstrated leadership abilities and ability to motivate staff; excellent customer service skills. Must have strong computer skills and working experience with Word and Excel.

Other: Must have: the ability to work effectively under the pressure of multiple demands, strict deadlines and frequently changing priorities; tact; patience; the ability to be flexible and; the ability to respect and respond to differing viewpoints; demonstrated ability to direct the activities of several work units; demonstrated experience planning work schedules and; working knowledge of maintenance and landscape duties and responsibilities within an institutional setting. Demonstrated strong commitment to providing excellent customer service in a culturally diverse environment. Must have a class “G” driver’s license.
