Overview:

The Shasta-Tehama-Trinity Joint Community College District (Shasta College) sits at the northern end of the Sacramento Valley, surrounded by mountains to the north, east, and west. DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Communication and Marketing Specialist position is a senior design position with established technical expertise and an understanding of best practices for social and digital media, print and graphic communications, and audio/video/animation techniques and technologies. Exercise a high degree of independence and initiative with proven skills and abilities in the development, design, and coordination of the production of a variety of digital and print materials. Under the direction of the assigned supervisor, participate in variety of activities involved in the planning, analysis, design, development, modification, maintenance, and implementation of the District's marketing program. Implement social media strategies, video productions, branded graphic communications and marketing pieces. Responsible for the development and application of a Digital Asset Management process for all video and photo assets for the district. Serve as a technical expert related to software and hardware used throughout the Marketing department. Participate in the development of promotional materials for Shasta College departments, programs, and services. Understand and help ensure a consistent, branded identity strategy for a large educational institution with multiple departments and programs including athletics.

This position may lead or monitor the work outcomes of other Communication and Marketing support staff. This position serves as the lead technical person in the Marketing Department and provides consultation to other Communication Coordinators or interns within the unit. Employees in this classification work with limited supervision within a framework of standard policies and procedures.

CLASSIFICATION: Range 40 on the current Classified Salary Schedule, 40 hours per week, 12 months per year. Work assignment hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

    Typical Duties, Knowledge and Ability
    Examples of typical duties are descriptive in and not restrictive in nature
    • Works with College administrators, staff, and faculty to research, develop, design, and direct publication of materials for the recruitment of students, and for the promotion of a wide variety of College programs and events (e.g., newsletters, programs, posters, brochures, flyers and electronic media content).
    • Creates, edits, and proofreads copy; designs and illustrates artwork; assists and takes digital photos and videos as required; corrects, edits, composes, and designs video productions for the college; creates simple animations for social and digital promotional use; selects paper stock and ink colors; produces press-ready artwork; and creates electronic fully accessible and compliant files.
    • Confers with District personnel and committees; acts as liaison between off-campus media vendors (such as printers and other third-party content production services) and the College.
    • Create, maintain, and grow the College's existing social media networks, as well as create and grow the College's brand on new emerging social media platforms.
    • Assist in keeping an updated database of professional portraits and videos of all college administration/events for announcements and publications.
    • Provides technical expertise and advice to administrators, faculty, and staff concerning graphics work requests; provides information regarding formats and design possibilities.
    • Provide guidance, leadership and mentoring to other Communication Coordinators and student interns. Support and develop the technical expertise needed to meet long-term business needs.
    • Coordinate projects and work activities between design staff
    • Contribute to the planning, organizing, and implantation of a yearly marketing strategy for the district.
    • May assist in the research and preparation of press releases/content.
    • Participates in web design committees and coordinates with the web design team on supporting graphics needed for the college website.
    • Uses a variety of computer software in the design and preparation of graphics, illustrations, and written materials for printed and electronic publications and other campus uses, such as campus signs and computer networks.
    • Performs other related duties similar to the above in scope and function as required.
    Knowledge of:
    • Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, Adobe Audition, Adobe After Effects, and Adobe Lightroom/Bridge; Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Hootsuite, and the ability to learn new and advancing changes in these and other technologies
    • Differences between various social media platforms and the industry standards required for posting content on each channel.
    • Principles of social media, video composition, marketing and advertising design
    • Methods, practices, terminology and procedures used in print and digital design
    • Type families, colors, inks and paper stock used in printing
    • Digital cameras, video and audio recording tools, various formats used for capture and export, and editing capabilities, off-camera lighting, gimbals, and other hardware in the production of video and photo content
    • Website architecture, HTML, HTML editors, CMS systems, web publishing procedures
    • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary
    • Modern office practices, procedures, and equipment
    • Record keeping techniques
    Ability to:
    • Directs/operates video productions ranging from single-camera productions to multi-camera field and studio productions. This includes interacting with and guiding clients, subjects/talent and others through the production process.
    • During post production, edits and/or directs the editing of recorded video, audio, and other materials to meet time, aesthetic, ethical and broadcast quality standards. Operates and/or oversees the use of a variety of post-production software applications for video editing, audio editing, end-use authoring, graphics creation, compositing, compressing, encoding/transcoding and captioning.
    • Maintains and/or oversees the maintenance and organization of video production equipment and post production equipment and software. Researches, requests and implements new video production technologies.
    • Oversee day-to-day posting, monitoring, and response to comments on all the College's social media efforts.
    • Provide direction and input for writing compelling copy for social media channels that speaks in an appropriate tone to the audience while maintaining the professional integrity of the institution
    • Operate a digital camera, Video camera, Audio recording equipment, and video lighting. gimbals, and other hardware in the production of video and photo content
    • Design and produce digitally compliant, and press-ready artwork
    • Coordinate the design and production of various printed and electronic publications
    • Estimate costs and analyze cost-effectiveness of pieces prior to production
    • Use a computer and various computer software in connection with the production of various types of printed and electronic deliverables/content
    • Establish and maintain accurate record-keeping systems, files, and other documentation
    • Related to the operations and activities of assigned duties
    • Communicate tactfully, patiently, and courteously in both oral and written formats
    • Understand and carry out both oral and written directions
    • Work with a significant degree of independence and judgment
    • Organize work and set priorities; manage multiple projects and deadlines
    • Establish and maintain effective, positive work relationships with internal and external clients while in the performance of required duties including those from diverse academic socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, and ability backgrounds.
    • Monitor the work outcomes of other designers and provide constructive feedback.
    • Represent the Marketing Department with courtesy, respect, and commitment to excellent customer service.
    • Work for long periods of time while sitting at a computer workstation
    • Demonstrate sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students


    Experience/Education
    Education Required:
    • Associates degree or equivalent with appropriate coursework
    Education Preferred:
    • Bachelor's degree in related discipline.
    Experience Required:
    • Four years of directly related work experience in social media management and graphic communications
    • Two years of experience producing educational or documentary videos in a collaborative environment is required
    Other Preferred Qualifications:
    • Relevant industry certifications.
