Allegheny College, an innovative national liberal arts college, invites applications for the position of Associate or Assistant Director of Financial Aid.

The Associate/Assistant Director will assist in the administration of federal, state and institutional student aid programs for a diverse population of undergraduate students. They will provide financial aid counseling to students and parents regarding application procedures and eligibility requirements for student aid programs, ensure compliance with all federal and state financial aid programs, and assist students and their families with the completion of financial aid forms. They are part of a collaborative team who focus on student success through a lens of equity and inclusion and has a passion for the liberal arts. The position reports to the Director of Financial Aid and is a full-time exempt position with title will be commiserate with experience.

The Associate/Assistant will:

  • Produce, review and distribute prospective and current students’ Financial Aid award packages
  • Provide oversight for Veteran’s and US Armed Forces education benefit programs
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state and institutional laws, regulations, and policies
  • Support the Director of Financial Aid with department leadership and mentorship of staff.
  • Collaborate with admission counselors to assist students and families in the financial decision making aspect of the college admission process
  • Partner with campus offices such as Class Deans, Athletic Coaches, Student Life, and Faculty to support retention efforts, including the support of emergency grant and other retention funding.
  • Collect and review all necessary information to verify the accuracy of federal applications; including, but not limited to, tax return transcripts, IRS Data Retrieval Tool and institutional verification statements
  • Oversee specific awarding projects such as Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency Programs, other state grants, student employment, loan processing, and/or verification
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • 2-5 years of financial aid or related experience for assistant director
  • 6+ years of financial aid or related experience for associate director
  • Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and being student-centered

Preferred qualifications and experiences:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Bilingual speaking and writing skills
  • Understanding of state and federal financial aid regulations
  • Exemplar attention to detail and organization skills
  • Previous experience in Colleague or other student information system

History - 200 Years

Founded in 1815, Allegheny College ranks among the oldest 1% of colleges and universities and is the 32nd oldest college in the United States. Perhaps as many as 100 colleges were established and failed before the Civil War. Allegheny is one of the hardy survivors that testify daily to the determination and vision of those early pioneers of higher education in America.

Allegheny is situated in Meadville, Pa., which was established in 1788 in the French Creek Valley, astride the route traversed by George Washington on his journey to Fort LeBoeuf a generation earlier. In 1815, Meadville was still a raw frontier town of about 400 settlers, of whom an unusually large number had come from Massachusetts and Connecticut. They dreamed of a college that might bring the educational opportunities of New England to the frontier. The Rev. Timothy Alden was recruited to take on the task, and two months after his arrival in April 1815, Allegheny was established-with Alden as its first president. 

Within half a dozen years, Alden succeeded in attracting sufficient funds to begin building a campus, having traveled throughout the eastern states seeking support for a planned library and classroom building. The need of a building to house a library led to the construction, in the 1820s, of Bentley Hall, today a leading example of early American architecture. Designed by Alden, this handsome structure still crowns the hill on which the campus is located. It is named in honor of Dr. William Bentley, who donated his outstanding private library to the College.

Each year, as part of the Commencement ceremony, seniors march through the doors of historic Bentley Hall toward the adventures that await them. In 2015, Allegheny will celebrate its 200-year history and the extraordinary futures of the graduating Bicentennial Class of 2015.
