Basic Function/Overview::

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
The mission of the Psychology Department is to provide the highest quality education for our diverse student population in an environment that is inclusive and conducive to learning. The department consists of 11 full-time and over 25 part-time faculty. We are a department of inclusive faculty representing a diversity of genders, education, ethnicities, religions, and sexual orientations. We value initiative, innovation, collaboration, professional development, and a willingness to grow as educators. Department faculty utilize evidence-based pedagogical practices in both teaching and learning. Our department graduates one of the highest numbers of AA-T degrees on campus. In addition, we serve students who are fulfilling prerequisites for other programs, or elect to take Psychology courses for personal improvement.

OVERVIEW:
The assignment will primarily consist of teaching statistics for the behavioral sciences (i.e Quantitative Psychology).

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Teach courses in the disciplines for which the candidate meets Minimum Qualifications or the equivalent.
  2. Teach assigned courses in accordance with the course outline of record.
  3. Instruct and support students with diverse backgrounds utilizing culturally relevant pedagogy, careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methods including for online instruction, informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions, student learning outcomes, and support a philosophy of instruction focusing on critical thinking and analysis.
  4. Maintain scheduled office and campus hours and participate in department/division meetings and committees.
  5. Perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with administrative responsibilities and College, division, and department policies.
  6. Late afternoon and/or evening assignments may be required as part of the regular contract.
  7. Effective oral and written communication with students.
  8. Commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population.
  9. Participate in departmental and college governance activities through committee service and/or other appropriate activities to maintain and improve the instructional program and to provide service to the college.
  10. In close cooperation with other discipline faculty, participate in the design, evaluation, revision, and development of culturally relevant curriculum, courses, and/or degrees.
  11. Engage in collegial, congenial, and professionally supportive relationships with members of the department and across campus.
  12. Coordinate efforts to close equity gaps in success in statistics courses.
  13. Teach courses in Psychology with additional preparation and/or experience in Statistics.
  14. Participate in curriculum development, program advisory board, learning outcome development and assessment, and grant work relevant to the program.
  15. Serve on college committees as necessary to maintain and improve instructional programs.
  16. Participate in appropriate professional development activities and remain current on relevant industry trends as they relate to current and future curriculum development.

Minimum Qualifications:

A. The minimum of one of the following awarded/conferred from a regionally accredited institution:

  1. Master’s degree in psychology; OR
  2. Bachelor’s degree in psychology AND Master’s degree in counseling, sociology, statistics, neuroscience, or social work; OR
  3. The equivalent (please request an equivalency review in the application); OR
  4. California Community College credential, “Valid for Life” (no longer issued), authorizing service as an instructor in the appropriate discipline; refer to Ed Code § 87355 (If meeting qualifications with this credential, a copy of the valid lifetime credential must be submitted with the application.);
AND

B. Commitment to the community college goals/objectives of providing quality programs and services for students with diverse abilities and interests; personal qualities to work effectively and sensitively in a multicultural environment; awareness and commitment to the special needs of non-traditional students.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Demonstrated expertise in statistics for the behavioral sciences.
  2. Successful teaching experience in lower division level statistics for the behavioral sciences courses and psychology courses to diverse student populations.
  3. Ability to interpret curriculum meaningfully for students with diverse backgrounds.
  4. Commitment to equity, social justice, and culturally responsive pedagogy.
  5. Demonstrated experience and skill with addressing issues of equity in the classroom and equity gaps in student retention and success.
  6. Awareness of and sensitivity to the needs of underserved student populations and demonstrated skill in supporting them in college-level courses.
  7. Ability to teach difficult concepts so that they are easily understood by all students.
  8. A willingness to critically examine one’s own pedagogical practices.
  9. Demonstrated experience adapting teaching practices to meet varied levels of student preparation.
  10. Experience working with Hispanic-serving educational institutions or organizations.
  11. Familiarity with and commitment to the mission and functions of a community college.
  12. Ability to effectively teach in an online environment.

License(s) & Other Requirements:

The incumbent may periodically be required to get to a variety of locations. If operating a vehicle, employees must have the ability to secure and maintain a valid California driver’s license.

Conditions of Employment:

The person holding this position is required to be present on Mt. San Antonio College’s campus to perform all essential duties and responsibilities.

This is a full-time, tenure-track, 10-month contract position that begins in the 2023-24 academic year. Placement on the salary schedule is based on formal education, full-time and/or part-time teaching, and related work experience, up to a maximum placement at step 9.

Official offers of employment are made by Mt. San Antonio College Human Resources and are made contingent upon Board approval. It is also required that a final offer of employment will only be made after the candidate has successfully been live scanned and clearance for employment is authorized by Human Resources. Selection Procedure::
