The Department of Radiation Oncology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for an Associate or Full Professor position in the non-tenure clinician educator track. Expertise is required in the specific area of medical physics. The selected candidate is expected to be an experienced senior radiation oncology physicist. The Director will be a key part of the senior management team which oversees the Department’s mission and plans for future development and growth. The individual selected should have strong leadership and managerial experience, with demonstrated success in a large, complex, multisite, radiation oncology academic/clinical practice. Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree. ABR Certification in Medical Physics.

Teaching responsibilities may include mentoring junior physics faculty, teaching and training radiation oncology residents and medical physics trainees. Also includes coordination of specialized educational and clinical physics activities. As Vice Chair, this position includes educational leadership responsibilities, including oversight of the CAMPEP Accredited Medical Physics Graduate Programs, and the Medical Physics Residency Program.

Clinical responsibilities may include supporting a full range of clinical physics activities, such as proton therapy, linac-based radiation therapy, brachytherapy, etc. at both the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine in Philadelphia, as well as across our 17 regional sites in PA and NJ.

Research or scholarship responsibilities may include actively and independently contributing to departmental research. The department has a range of innovative research projects, which include but not limit to proton and x-ray FLASH therapy, real-time adaptive radiotherapy, motion management, auto-planning, and robustness optimization, etc. With increasing needs in automation and clinical decision support, candidates with clinical experience in implementing artificial intelligence or machine learning algorithms into clinical practice are encouraged. The position is not a pure research position; demonstration of clinical translation of research/new technology is essential. Evidence of scholarship is required in the Clinician-Educator track.

The Vice Chair of Medical Physics Operations oversees all aspects of the Medical Physics Division’s mission; including clinical, educational and research activities (e.g.; budget requests, space allocation, capital equipment needs, clinical coverage and CAMPEP accreditation). The Vice Chair is responsible for the physics technological operations, and standardized policies and procedures of the Roberts Proton Therapy Center, as well as 17 integrated sites, including three proton centers, in both New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Qualified candidates must have excellent communication skills with a proven track record of successful mentorship. The candidate will work with the Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs to ensure consistency in clinical operations. The Vice Chair also partners with the Vice Chair of the Research Division in creating a robust research program with associated metrics for the Physics Division. The Vice Chair also plays an important role in mentoring faculty, particularly in helping them increase clinical and research productivity, including funding, lecture invitations, and publication of articles in high impact journals The work done by the Vice Chair must align with the overall department operations and structure. The Vice Chair is responsible for ensuring effective and efficient communication to all parties associated with medical physics operations (both faculty and staff) including the Chair, COO, CFO and COS. The Vice Chair is responsible for providing annual updates for the departmental executive summary related to regional operations, as well as leading meetings/representing the Department at meetings regarding medical physics ensuring consistency in all processes and policies. The Vice Chair facilitates any changes in processes or policy in partnership with the Chiefs of Clinical Physics (photon, proton and network). The Vice Chair works closely with those faculty and staff mentioned previously to maintain an excellent level of general operations. The Vice Chair is expected to facilitate an environment of quality and safety by incorporating quality initiatives across the medical physics division.
