Under the general supervision of the Director of El Centro, the Student Success Counselor of El Centro is responsible for supporting development, implementation, and management of El Centro. HCC is looking to hire one (1) Student Success Counselor of this newly created center. The Student Success Counselor will support the overall future efforts for this new Latinx centered department. El Centro will provide a centralized bilingual and culturally responsive space that creates the opportunities and conditions to address inequity by providing equitable solutions, resources and services that intentionally support and align with the specific needs of Latinx students, family, faculty, and staff. The drop-in service center will have a culturally responsive bilingual team-based case management approach. Offering these bilingual services:

The Student Success Counselor will provide support to student populations that may be at risk
for degree completion. Counselors will develop positive relationships with students in order to
support their academic success and ultimately work toward increasing rates of retention,
persistence, and completion.

  • Assists students with the enrollment process including: applying to the college, facilitating placement testing, and completing necessary HCC documents.
  • Maintains student caseload to recruit and matriculate into certificate/degree programs at HCC.
  • Work with students to find resources for both academic and non-academic barriers.
  • Provide high-touch, individualized support and academic counseling.
  • Create individual student success plans and develop/coordinate appropriate interventions via advising, and monitoring for new and continuing program students.
  • Creates and provides workshops to students throughout the semester on various academic skills, self advocacy, self-management, study strategies, etc.
  • Plans, organizes, coordinates and leads projects and activities.
  • Supports a Latinx Mentorship Program in collaboration with El Centro staff and HCC support services to foster a sense of belonging amongst participants.
  • Meets with El Centro Director regularly.
  • Establishes and maintains confidential records and contributes to program record keeping system.
  • Serves as El Centro liaison to the student body, staff and faculty; attends college functions when El Centro representation is required.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including some nights and weekends is required to meet grant objectives.
  • Maintains a database, ensuring records are updated on a monthly basis.
  • Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Qualifications

    REQUIRED:

  • Master’s Degree in Education, Human Services, Sociology, Psychology or closely related field;
  • Two (2) years’ experience OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience;
  • Bilingual in Spanish;
  • Demonstrated understanding of Latinx cultures;
  • Experience tracking and assessing data;
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills;
  • Demonstrated experience in Latinx student development and recruitment strategies and high-impact practices;
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission of a twenty-first century comprehensive community college;
  • Ability to work in an effective team of professionals, and the ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff and student body;
  • Understanding the needs Hispanic Service Institution;
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including some evenings and weekends in order to meet grant initiatives;

    Full-time, 12 month MCCC/MTA position

    MCCC Title: Senior Community Outreach

    Salary: Minimum $53,590 - $56,320 (Grade 4). Actual salary will be commensurate with education and experience in accordance with MCCC/MTA Collective Bargaining Agreement. Full State benefits.

    Hours: 37.5 hours/week
