Description
University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus

Department: Medicine- Division of Renal Diseases and Hypertension

Job Title: Post-Doctoral Fellow

Position #: 00633047 – Requisition #: 28759

Job Summary:

Vascular calcification is one of the major complications and cause of death in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Currently, CKD affects an estimated 37 million people in the U.S. (15% of the adult population; more than 1 in 7 adults), There is no efficiency therapy available for the treatment of calcification. The major goal of this position is to find a novel therapeutic target for vascular calcification. This position is responsible for characterizing genetically modified mice and cell lines to elucidate the molecular mechanism of vascular calcification. The person will remove genes in the entire genome of cells using RNAi or CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats) gene editing to examine which gene participates in the pathogenesis of vascular calcification. The results will be reported in high-impact journals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Performing confocal microscopes
  • Characterizing genetically engineered cell lines
  • Performing CRISPR gene editing
  • Performing general biochemical molecular biological techniques such as quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and immunoblot analysis
  • Writing papers
  • Helping supervisor to write grants.

Why Join Us:

For more than 10 years, the Miyazaki laboratory has strived to find the underlying mechanisms of chronic kidney disease (CKD) complications such as vascular calcification and therapeutic targets for treating these diseases.

Our overall goal is to identify novel therapeutic targets for treatment of CKD complications. In pursuit of this goal, we have investigated molecules and mechanisms that trigger ectopic mineralization and vascular toxicities in CKD. In the past, we have discovered that several metabolites (i.e., saturated fatty acids and bile acids) and kidney-specific proteins (i.e., TMEMs) as well as intracellular signaling (i.e., autophagy, ER stress and cell death) contribute to CKD complications. Our group currently focuses on the following three NIH funded projects: 1) the role of novel cell death pathways in the regulation of vascular calcification, 2) identification of novel metabolites contributing to CKD complications and 3) identification of novel kidney-specific proteins contributing to CKD complications.
