Job Description

The College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) is a key part of the NAU New Economy Initiative designed to prepare and encourage more students to stay in Arizona and to work in high need and fulfilling careers throughout the state. For this initiative to be successful, CHHS will partner with our community and academic partners to remove barriers and increase access to our programs.

To help us reach this vision, the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) seeks a Financial Oversight Analyst Intermediate to join the CHHS Dean's office finance team, which serves as a primary liaison for the college and supports all CHHS departments. This position will provide financial support to one of the fastest and rapidly expanding colleges at NAU. Under direction of Dean Lillian Smith, CHHS has been growing at an exponential pace and is in need of the right candidate to help the Dean's office complete a variety of financial tasks and to meet budgetary goals. The right candidate will have experience and interest in finance, accounting, budget data analysis and compliance.

Budget Oversight, Analysis and Management - 60%
  • Oversee expenses and propose modifications as necessary.
  • Manage state, local, grant and foundation accounts.
  • Gather data, prepare and present monthly budget summaries, analyze and offer recommendations.
  • Compare actual financial data to budgets, evaluate and research areas of divergence.
  • Prepare departmental budgets and forecasts for review by key stakeholders.
  • Monitor financial transactions for compliance with policy.
  • Prepare and initiate journal transfers as needed.
  • Provide oversight and management of PCard expenses.
  • Review and analyze appropriate use of class, program and college fees.
  • Preparation of specific expense tracking as requested by departments and key stakeholders.

Liaison - 20%
  • Primary financial resource and point of contact for department Chairs and staff.
  • Serve as liaison for all Finance service team transactions.
  • Review and approve service purchase and travel requests for budget compliance and offers recommendations.
  • Serves as liaison between all CHHS departments and the Dean's office.

Position Management - 15%
  • Collaborate with departments and Principal Investigators for allocation of funding effort to soft-funded employees, temporary employees and summer faculty.
  • Initiate funding changes to accurately reflect effort from external and internal funding.
  • Coordinates with departments and Budget Office to initiate/recycle positions.
  • Supports Principal Investigators with grant post-award expenditures, summer salary, and funding changes.

Other - 5%
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • 2-4 years of accounting or finance experience.
  • A combination of related education, experience and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Requirements.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge
  • Working knowledge of financial oversight and operations tools, procedures, processes, policies, and concepts, such as payroll management systems and budget analysis projects, as well as expense tracking and trend analysis.
  • Knowledge of financial reporting in higher education and university budgeting practices.
  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft Financials or PeopleSoft platforms.

Skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Skill in financial modeling.

Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary

Salary range begins at $49,000. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

Benefits

This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System; paid vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. More information on benefits at NAU is available on the Human Resources benefits website. Classified Staff employees are in a probationary status for their first six months at NAU. NAU is a tobacco and smoke-free campus. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Additionally, new employees will begin participating in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date.
