Site assignment will depend on background and alignment with library specific requirements and will report to either the Director of Access and Resource Sharing Services based in Fondren Library or the Director of the Hamon Arts Library. Both positions are Monday through Friday with occasional Saturday rotations. The successful Access Services Manager (ASM) applicant will have a track record of strong customer service delivery, effective communication skills, supervisory experience, and the demonstrated leadership abilities required to oversee the management of the library’s main service point at the respective library. The ASM is primarily responsible for promoting excellent customer service through the hiring, training, supervising, and evaluation of part-time Access Services student employees (Circulation, Resource Sharing, and Stacks). As a member of the larger Access Services and Resource Sharing team responsible for the daily operations of all campus libraries, the ASM will participate in developing programs to improve customer service, communicate and coordinate with team members in other libraries, and actively seek to improve local and system-wide processes and services. SMU is a nationally ranked private research university in Dallas, TX, with eight degree-granting schools. SMU Libraries includes six libraries on the main campus and one library at our satellite location in Taos, NM. SMU Libraries and the SMU campus is dedicated to diversity and inclusion. - Service to Patrons and Customer Service Shares responsibility for staffing the Main Desk as the supervisor on duty, in conjunction with the student staff schedule, including nights and some weekends. Assists patrons in the identification and location of library resources and public printers/scanners. Collects/reverses fines and assists patrons with questions regarding their library account. Student Worker Management Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates part-time student employees. Monitors student employee’s customer service skills with regular feedback and correction. Manages the scheduling of student worker shifts as well as time off requests. Keeps student expenditures within budget. Collaborates with the Director of Access and Resource Sharing Services on policies, procedures, and training materials.Administration Monitors and reports updates of the library hours to LibApps. Submits maintenance requests through Stable and coordinates supply orders that are sent for purchase. Manages group study rooms, private graduate carrel assignments, and locker checkouts.Committee Work and Special Projects Services on various committees as related to job duties, including, but not limited to, the Circulation Taskforce, and the Building Emergency Team, and works on special projects as assigned.Fondren-Specific Duties Oversees initial search and patron contact for missing items. Responsible for entering periodical statistics. Serves as backup to Director of Access and Resource Sharing Services and exercises discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance that pertains to Fondren main desk.Hamon Arts Library-Specific Duties Submits Gate Counts In collaboration with Dir. of Access Services, acts as point of contact for Hamon's security guard. Acts as point of contact for subcontractors. Manages scheduling and reservations for Hawn Conference room. Assists librarians with collections-related projects, including gift processing and weeding. Supports Hawn Gallery-related events and exhibitions.
Qualifications
Education and Experience: Required Qualifications:
- High School Diploma 3 years of work experience. 1 year of library experience. 1 year of supervisory experience or demonstrated excellence in leadership. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively.
- Bachelor’s Degree (Disciplines in Visual, Performing, or Communication Arts preferred for Hamon Arts Library position)Demonstrated excellence in customer service.Experience in Access Services or Circulation.Experience with ALMA or another integrated library system.Strong organizational skills.Strong commitment to customer service.Demonstrated ability to problem-solve.
