The AV Specialist reports to the Manager of Instructional Technology within the Rhodes Information Services Division. The AV Specialist will partner with faculty on the use of academic technology in support of the pedagogical goals of the faculty, departments, and the College. This role will contribute to an enthusiastic, innovative environment with a strong focus on improving student learning and success, as they act as a technical liaison between the College community and the IS division.

Job duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Design, install, and implement new classroom technology as well as perform upgrades on systems including, but not limited to, classroom computers, projectors, speakers, control systems, switchers, cameras, and related wiring infrastructure

  • Collaborate with faculty individually and in groups to determine the best technology solutions and approaches in support of their teaching and learning goals

  • Maintain vendor relationships which include proposal building and design consultation for the installation or maintenance of technology enabled spaces

  • Maintain accurate inventory of classroom technology and related equipment

  • Research, test, and recommend appropriate emerging technologies and suggest innovative pedagogical strategies and tools

  • Work with other Academic Technology staff to provide instructional support on systems that promote teaching an learning, these include but are not limited to Canvas LMS and Zoom video conferencing solutions

  • Regular attendance is an essential function to perform the duties of this position

  • Create training materials, technology space plans, and budget analysis documentation to ensure spaces on campus are continuing to meet the college’s needs in accordance with the strategic plan.

  • Coordinate closely with the IS Help Desk and Desktop Support staff to align customer service and technology strategies

  • Provide regular reporting about campus academic technology news and issues to the Information Services Division

  • Seek out professional development activities, such as attending conferences, workshops, and webinars related to job functions

  • Train and supervise team of student associates to assist on special projects as assigned

Job Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED is required; associate's degree strongly preferred

  • Three (3) or more years of experience in the areas of design, installation, support, and maintenance of classroom or audio visual technology or equivalent experience of three (3)- five (5) years of low voltage cabling infrastructure.

  • Experience with designing, installing, and supporting complex AV systems.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of AV technology equipment including projectors, control systems, switchers and cabling requirements.

  • Proficient understanding of IT networking infrastructure including AV over IP systems.

  • Must have basic understanding of network terminology. IP addresses, Subnet Masks, Gateways, and VLAN assignments.

  • Must have general understanding of audio and video inputs and outputs.

  • Must be able to meet physical requirements associated with climbing ladders, pulling cables, and lifting heavy (20-30lbs) objects at times.

  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated customer service experience and interpersonal skills.

  • Experience in training users to use technology including the creation of supported training materials.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years of AV design, installation, and maintenance experience

  • Training or certifications in AV related fields

  • Knowledge or experience in programming AMX, Crestron, or Atlona control systems

  • Knowledge in supporting ADA requirements and compliance standards

  • Experienced in managing multiple AV projects at a time

  • Supporting an AV infrastructure in an educational environment would be desirable

  • Knowledge in supporting learning management systems (LMS) especially with a focus on Canvas
