Job Summary


The Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences (AES) at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for a full-time Teaching Assistant Professor (non-tenure-track Instructor) to teach in its undergraduate program with an emphasis on aerospace vehicle design (aircraft and/or spacecraft), propulsion, and aeronautics. While Teaching Assistant Professor is the anticipated hiring rank, Teaching Associate Professor or Teaching Professor ranks may be considered based on experience and qualifications. This position will be a member of the AES faculty and will participate in course development and assessment, faculty governance, and university service. The position is anticipated to start in Fall 2023.

CU Boulder's Ann and H.J. Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences is nationally known for teaching and research that address both challenges and opportunities facing the aerospace profession. Students work extensively on hands-on experiments in the Practical Innovation Through Learning, Observation, and Teaching (PILOT) Laboratory and design projects alongside expert faculty in the department's world-class research centers. CU aerospace alumni are working at top companies and research labs, including the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Johnson Space Center, The Boeing Company, and Lockheed Martin.

We are home to 58 tenure-track, research, and instructional faculty, over 550 graduate students, and over 1,100 undergraduates. Our vibrant community of engineers and scientists tackle challenges in aerospace technology and science.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be


A successful candidate in this position will typically teach 5 courses during the academic year. This position typically includes an effort allocation of 80% teaching and 20% service. Research is typically not included in this position unless related to engineering education.

  • This is a three-year renewable position.

What We Require

  • PhD degree in either aerospace, aeronautical, or astronautical engineering, or a closely related field or a MS degree in either aerospace, aeronautical, or astronautical engineering, or a closely related field with 4 years of experience.


What You Will Need

  • Viable candidates should be capable of teaching a wide range of undergraduate aerospace engineering courses in both lecture and laboratory formats. Specific areas of interest include aerospace vehicle design (aircraft and/or spacecraft) and propulsion systems. These areas include courses related to statics and structural analysis, aerospace vehicle design and performance, dynamics and control, aerodynamics, propulsion, aircraft design, and thermodynamics. Engineering design experience is ideal.
  • An understanding and appreciation for aerospace engineering fundamentals, as well as excellent management, communication, and organizational skills, along with a willingness to learn quickly, is required.
  • Applicants must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills along with the ability to teach and work in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Candidates with prior university teaching experience in a relevant field and years of industry experience in a relevant field are encouraged to apply. Relevant fields are aerospace, aeronautical, astronautical engineering, or closely related fields.
