Job Description Summary

The University-Assisted Community School (UACS) Fellow will serve as the connector between university-assisted community schools (UACS) school site and the University.

Major components of the position include planning, organizing and coordinating the UACS program’s university academic partnerships, student workers and volunteers and supporting their delivery of effective instruction and programming. This position will also implement direct service related to program implementation. This position will implement all required program reporting and compliance, including that of funders and the Netter Center. This position works as part of a team with other Netter Center staff and school partners and will work closely with ABCS courses and facilitate connections to faculty partners. This position works closely with school administrators and Netter site/program directors to ensure programming addresses the academic needs of students and also supervises undergraduate fellows, work-study and volunteer Penn students. The position is supervised by the UACS Executive Director.

Founded in 1992, the Barbara and Edward Netter Center for Community Partnerships is the University's primary vehicle for advancing civic and community engagement at Penn. It brings together the resources and assets of both the University and the wider community to help solve universal problems such as poverty, health inequities, environmental sustainability, and inadequate, unequal education as they are manifested in the University's local geographic area of West Philadelphia and Philadelphia at large. The Netter Center develops and helps implement democratic, mutually transformative, place-based partnerships between Penn and West Philadelphia that advance research, teaching, learning, practice, and service and improve the quality of life on campus and in the community. The Netter Center works with and serves as a model for other higher education institutions across the United States and around the world.

The Netter Center’s university-assisted community schools (UACS) is a strategy to educate, engage, empower, and serve all members of the community in which the school is located and engage students (K-16+) in real world, community problem solving. UACS collaborates with partners to advance teaching, research, learning and service, as well as the civic development of their students.

This position is a one year term appointment, with the possibility of renewal.

Job Description

Job Responsibilities

School day, OST/Afterschool and Summer Program

In partnership with Netter staff, University partners, school administration, after school instructors, UACS teacher-partners and Penn students select, design and implement programs that improve both student academic achievement and the problem-solving learning approach. Academic programming includes collaboration with school day teachers and administrators to support enrichment activities for learning across the core subjects through problem-based learning and community development activities. This position will work closely with ABCS courses and facilitate connections with faculty partners. The position will also work with teacher-partners to plan and implement age-appropriate afterschool and summer programming that meets the needs of the enrolled youth.

Penn Student Recruitment and Supervision

Supervise Penn students engaged in school day and afterschool programming, coordinate undergraduate fellows, work-study and volunteer Penn students; convene regular reflection check-in meetings with partners; convene site-based stakeholder meetings and maintain communications within staff groups about site-related programs and information.

Evaluation & Data Collection

Record, track and maintain Penn student participant program enrollment daily attendance and manage required paperwork. Communicate with school leadership and liaisons about programs, enrollment and attendance. Collaborate with evaluation partners and provide feedback into program design; collaborate with other programs, staff, teachers and Penn students to ensure best program practices and sharing of resources; collaborate with Netter colleagues across all school sites to build team learning and best practices.

UACS Program Operations

Convene with school administration, faculty and Penn-based faculty and partners to plan, coordinate and implement school-based programs.

Communications

Maintain regular written and verbal communications with the UACS teams, school administration, school-based and Penn-based partners to keep all parties informed about program developments and updates. Collaborate with all Netter colleagues across all school sites to build team learning and best practices via presentations and other multimodal communication methods. Set goals and reflect on the functions of the UACS fellow position.

Capstone Paper

Complete a Problem-Solving Learning paper during your final summer utilizing and building upon your experiences as a UACS fellow.

Perform additional duties as assigned

This position is a one year term appointment, with the possibility of renewal.

Qualifications

A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and 1-2 years of experience working with K-12 students or equivalent combination of education or social work and experience. Strong experience with community schools, preferably university-assisted community schools, and service learning, preferably academically based community service and youth workforce development. Knowledge about Penn and West Philadelphia preferred. Experience in facilitating successful youth development programs, collaborative endeavors, and managing multiple programs at once. Track record of both self-directed and team-oriented accomplishments. Organized, detail-oriented, accurate, dependable, and flexible.

Salary offers are made based on the candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
