Job Description:


Title: Wellness Counselor


Unit: MCCC Professional Staff


Department: Student Support Services, Wellness Resource Center


Reports to: Assistant Dean of Student Support Services


Date: January 17, 2023 (Reopened July 11, 2023)


General Summary: The Wellness Counselor provides short-term multiculturally competent psychological counseling/support to a highly diverse population of students in order to enhance their personal development and academic success. This individual seeks and maintains partnerships with regional agencies for referral-based services for students in need of ongoing services. The Wellness Counselor consults with and provides professional development for, faculty, staff, and administrators regarding student mental health and crisis intervention skills.


Duties and Responsibilities:


Counseling Assessment and Referral and Crisis Intervention


  • Assess and refer students for outside mental health resources; provide onsite and virtual goal-oriented, short-term counseling services as needed.
  • Respond to psychological emergencies and other emotional crises (i.e., provide crisis intervention and clinical risk assessment for students, arranging for immediate outside services when necessary).
  • Develop and maintain relationships with area agencies, private referral options, and community resources, and connect students who need ongoing, extensive, or specialized psychotherapy with those agencies/resources.

Consultation


  • Consult with faculty, staff, and administrators regarding students' mental health.
  • Serve on the College's Student Assessment and Intervention Team (SAIT); assist with preliminary threat/risk assessment when issues of harm to self or others are involved.
  • Consult with college administration on new, special, or continuing grants and other projects related to students' mental health.
  • Coordinate and facilitate training for staff, faculty, and administrators relevant to student's emotional well-being and related behavior on campus.

Mental Health Wellness Programs


  • Assist in the development and coordination of the Counseling Internship Program in partnership with regional graduate programs; supervise master's level intern(s), including onsite daily activities, training, and evaluating clinical development for academic progress.
  • Collaborate with MCC staff/faculty and outside partners to develop and deliver wellness programs related to student mental health including psychoeducational programs, workshops, informational outreach programs, etc.

General and Administrative Functions


  • Perform administrative tasks associated with departmental activities.
  • Develop assessment strategies in order to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of services.


Requirements:


Minimum Qualifications:


  • Master's degree in Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Social Work, or a closely related field; 5-10 years of experience that includes psychological counseling, clinical and risk assessment, and crisis intervention; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Current Massachusetts licensure as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) or Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) with at least 3 years post-licensure experience and the ability to supervise master's level clinical interns.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational, and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability in the use of computer-based technologies
  • Experience with, and a commitment to, equity-minded work
  • Experience with equity-minded work and understanding of individuals with diverse identities such as race, ethnicity, socioeconomic level, sexual orientation, veterans, and individuals with different academic preparation levels and varying physical and learning abilities

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Bilingual skills a plus


Additional Information:


Salary Range: $90,271 is the starting salary for Column H under the MCCC 2022 Salary grids for a Grade 6 rank; actual salary commensurate with academic background and experience. Location: Bedford and Lowell Campuses


Hours: 37.5 hours per week, schedule to be determined upon hire. This position will be eligible for a maximum of two days of telework in accordance with the College's telework policy.
