Position Overview

The Department of Civil Engineering in the School of Science and Engineering is seeking a motivated tenure-track faculty member to support our growing programs. The successful candidate will have expertise in the area of sustainable or resilient transportation infrastructure and offer design courses in both environmental and transportation engineering. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to excellence in both teaching and learning and research/scholarship. Highest consideration will be granted to those with an existing externally funded research program or the potential to develop a sustained sponsored research program.

Position Summary

The Department of Civil Engineering at Merrimack College invites applications for a tenure track faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor. The Department is seeking creative scholars who can contribute fundamentally to one or more of the following areas: sustainable/resilient transportation infrastructure, environmental engineering, and transportation engineering. In addition, the successful candidate will have an existing funded research program or demonstrate a strong potential for establishing a research program as well as a demonstrated interest in teaching.

Merrimack’s School of Science and Engineering programs have a history of providing exceptional undergraduate education. The College is interested in maintaining that identity while increasing its research capacity. Consequently, we are interested in expanding our graduate portfolio within the Department, which currently includes an M.S. in Civil Engineering and an M.S. in Engineering Management.

The School currently enrolls 633 undergraduate and 100 graduate students with 56 full-time faculty, 26 part-time faculty, and 13 staff members. Moreover, we anticipate significant growth in the student body after institutional investments that will expand the engineering footprint on campus by 50,000 sq. ft. Other investments over the next few years include new academic programming, increased personnel, and procurement of additional laboratory resources.

Primary Responsibilities

The successful candidates will:

    Teach undergraduate courses and/or upper-level undergraduate/graduate courses.Actively involve undergraduate and graduate students in research projects.Maintain a record of quality, peer-reviewed scholarship.Pursue external grant opportunities to support the development and growth of engineering.Develop, implement, and assess curricula to maintain ABET accreditation.Maintain office hours at times that provide appropriate access to students.Participate in Department, School, College, professional society, and community service.

Qualifications

The candidate, at a minimum, will have a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in Civil Engineering or closely related field. Strong verbal/written communication skills are essential. Additionally, the ability to foster an environment that values diversity, equity and inclusion is expected of all Merrimack community members.

School of Science and Engineering

The School of Science and Engineering is dedicated to providing students with the foundation for a high-quality STEM education. The School is composed of a talented and dedicated team of faculty and staff preparing students for impactful careers. The School opened a new Engineering Innovation Center in fall 2022 to fuel collaboration, hands-on learning, and research.
