Applications are invited for a 12 Months post of a UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 within School of Architecture Planning and Environmental Policy.

WECOAdapt brings a unique transdisciplinary perspective to address climate change, urban expansion and water and land degradation. The project combines the ecohydrology and adaptive social protection approaches, integrating them into adaptation planning for improving the understanding and management of drought and floods and ecosystems of sub-Saharan cities. It validates and tests ecohydrology models in five pilot sites in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and applies participatory backcasting to co-design adaptation pathways and options with the community and stakeholders in five Water-Land-Climate Co-design Labs.

WECOAdapt focuses on reducing and preventing negative impacts of floods and drought and of unsustainable urban development, and on reversing the degradation of water and land resources and decline in biodiversity. The project will contribute to empowering local communities, researchers and institutions through effective engagement, to improving their understanding and ability to design and implement adaptation options while improving water resources and ecosystems, and to strengthening the financial and social infrastructure to support adaptation in the future.

This is a research focused role, where you will conduct a specified programme of research supported by research training and development under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator. The primary purpose of the role is to further develop your research skills and competences, including the processes of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications, the development of funding proposals, the mentorship of graduate students along with the opportunity to develop your skills in research led teaching.

In addition to the Principal Duties and Responsibilities listed below, the successful candidate will also carry out the following duties specific to this project:

  • Contribute to and collaborate within the WECOAdapt project consortium
  • Develop novel ways of integrating spatial planning and ecohydrology for climate change adaptation
  • Review good practices of water and land management strategies and policies for reducing the ecosystem vulnerability and increasing community adaptive capacity and resilience
  • Support the development of the Water-Land-Climate Co-design Labs and project team in scenario building and co-development of adaptation options
  • Participate and contribute to relevant workshops and projects' events
  • Publish scientific papers and contribute to project reports
