Department Summary & Job Purpose:

Assistant Rowing Coach and Athletics Equipment Coordinator is a full-time coaching and administrative position. The successful candidate will support the head rowing coach in coaching, organizing, and administering an intercollegiate varsity rowing program, overseeing the novice rowing team, the Community Rowing program, and the athletics equipment operations for the department.

 

Core Job Duties and Responsibilities: 

Assistant Rowing Coach/Novice Team Rowing Coach (70%)
  • Support the head rowing coach in developing and implementing strategies to successfully recruit, yield, mentor, and retain a diverse group of academically and athletically talented student-athletes.
  • Coach the novice rowing team and lower varsity crews.
  • Assist the head rowing coach in all aspects of running a competitive collegiate rowing program.
  • Organize and manage training programs for the novice team and support the varsity team in consultation with the head rowing coach.
  • Attend and support team needs at all practices, regattas, and the yearly team training trip for novice and varsity rowing crews.
  • Create a team environment that allows all student-athletes to grow and develop as students, athletes, leaders, and as individuals.
  • Support the oversight of the College’s boathouse and docks including racing shells, oars, and ergs all year round.
  • Promote a culture of health, well-being, and safety in all aspects of the intercollegiate varsity rowing program and specifically the novice team.
Community Rowing Coordinator (10%)
  • Manage the MHC Community Rowing Program over the summer and winter months.
  • Recruit additional members through advertisement.
  • Collect annual dues and waivers from all members.
  • Coach the community rowers of all experience levels ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment. This includes coaching rowers on the water as well as instructing new members on rowing safety and basics.
  •   Athletics Equipment Coordinator (15%)
  • Supervise and manage all varsity sports apparel including upkeep, maintenance, and supervision of varsity team uniforms and inventories.
  • Serve as the liaison between MHC and our uniform and apparel vendor.
  • Work with apparel vendors to arrange online team and department stores throughout the year.
  • Work with head coaches and our suppliers and vendors to purchase team apparel in the appropriate purchase cycle including deciding on items and their design.
  • Work with all varsity teams to ensure their apparel and uniform items are distributed and collected each season.
  •   Other Duties (5%)
  • Participate on Department and College committees as assigned.
  • Assist the Associate Director of Athletics for Facilities with duties, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications: 

The position requires a Bachelor’s degree; a valid driver’s license; excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills with the ability to efficiently and effectively carry tasks out to completion; and the ability to function effectively at a competitive liberal arts NCAA Division III college with highly selective academic standards.

Preferred Qualifications:

Prior experience coaching within a collegiate rowing program is preferred.

License/Certifications: N/A

Compliance Requirements: 

All department employees are required to demonstrate exemplary ethical conduct and conformance to NCAA rules and regulations; the duties of the position are to be performed in compliance with all NCAA, Conference, and College rules and regulations; and any rules violations on behalf of themselves or any knowledge of violations within the department are to be reported to the appropriate parties. Annually, each department member must pass the NCAA Division III rules test and complete athletics staff sexual violence prevention training.

Physical Demands: 

  • Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/ or leg control requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated as light work.
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
  • Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Sufficient clarity of speech required includes those which permit the employee to discern verbal instructions and communicate effectively in person and by telephone.
  • Employee speaks with students and other faculty daily by telephone, e-mail, or in person on a daily basis.
  • Visual Acuity including color, depth perception and field vision.

Working Conditions: 

  • Regular early morning, evening, and weekend hours are involved and the ability to travel is required.
