Job description

We are seeking to recruit a social science scholar with substantive research and teaching interests in education policy, sociology of education or a closely allied field to teach on our MA Education programme and conduct high quality research. The successful candidate will also contribute to other programmes in the School. They will be a member of the friendly and vibrant Centre for Public Policy Research (CPPR) within the School of Education, Communication and Society, which is a School in the Faculty of Social Science and Public Policy.

Ideally, they will have interests that strengthen the existing programmes of work in CPPR. For example, candidates may have particular expertise in race, gender, class, sexuality or disability and education, the politics of education or the curriculum, or the sociology of knowledge, work or the professions. The successful candidate will have strong teamworking skills, proven teaching ability and a proven interest and track record in research.

The post is maternity cover and offered on our academic education pathway.

To support the maternity cover arrangements of the current post-holder, the successful candidate should be available to start between 1st April and 1st May 2023. The post will be offered on a full-time, fixed term contract for 12 months.

Key responsibilities

The post holder will be expected to contribute to the academic life and culture of the Centre for Public Policy Research (CPPR) and the wider School, including by:

• Contributing to curriculum development, teaching and module leadership on the programme. This will include leading the core module, Critical Perspectives on Education.
• Contributing to other programmes such as the BA Social Sciences as required
• Acting as Personal Tutor to students and supervising student dissertations
• Conducting high quality research and knowledge exchange activities
• Promoting and marketing the work of the School
• Contributing to the smooth running of the School by taking on organisational responsibilities as directed by the Head of School

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

1. PhD in relevant area

2. Strong communication skills, with excellent written and spoken English

3. Excellent teamworking skills and a commitment to inclusive and democratic ways of working

4. Expertise in education policy or a closely allied field, with a strong grounding in a foundation discipline

5. Ability and willingness to make a broad contribution to teaching and supervision beyond the candidate s immediate specialism

6. Proven teaching ability

7. An interest in and aptitude for communication across disciplines and with education professionals

8. A proven interest and track record in research.

This role is being advertised at grade 6 ( 40.386 to 47,414) and grade 7 ( 48,737 to 57,353). To be appointed at Grade 7, in addition to the above, there is an expectation that candidates will be able to evidence the majority of the following: a completed teaching qualification equivalent to a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice; having passed probation at a higher education institution on an academic contract; a consistent track record of high quality publications over at least a three-year period; having undertaken a significant administrative role
