Pasadena City College is hiring a full-time, tenure-track Dental Hygiene commencing with the 2023-2024 academic year. Dental Hygiene program faculty members are directly responsible and accountable for ensuring the fulfillment of educational goals and objectives of the Dental Hygiene program and ensuring program compliance with regulatory requirements of Dental Hygiene Board of California and maintenance of program compliance standards as required by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. These responsibilities require leadership in both academic and clinical setting and include meeting student retention goals, participating in educational planning; evaluating student performance; motivating and advising students; and generating program reports as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE FULL TIME FACULTY DENTAL HYGIENE INSTRUCTOR:

Teach assigned courses or classes in this discipline/area (including lecture, laboratory and clinical courses on site or in off-campus practice clinical settings).

Ability to perform the work of hygienist in a clinical setting, including those tasks related to preparation of the clinical and or classroom environment.

Assures instructional activities are conducted in compliance with the Dental Practice Act of the State of California and with the standards Dental Hygiene Board of California, and the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).

Keep current in the field of Dental Hygiene and instructional pedagogy by attendance of conferences, workshops and self-directed study.

Participate in the program and curriculum revision and update process and collaboration with the college and faculty members in the discipline to maintain program accreditation and Board Approval.

Provide substitute coverage for other program faculty, as needed to sustain the program.

Plans learning experiences (i.e. classroom activities, pre/post conferences, and clinical assignments for student supervision, evaluation, and feedback conferences).

Prepares written evaluation materials (i.e. syllabi, tests, handouts, etc.) for submission and duplication in a timely manner.

Requests and submits complete descriptions of equipment and supplies needed for activities (clinical lab supplies, AV material, course budgets, etc.).

Manages schedule to ensure regular and prompt attendance at all required course activities, committee and faculty meetings.

Plans and schedules teaching and clinical/lab activities for curriculum courses and teaching.

Prepares formal and informal reports as required for Systematic Program Evaluation governing institution, and governmental and accrediting agencies.

Controls and monitors ongoing instructional activities and systems in order to maintain adherence to prescribed standards and student evaluation.

Holds students accountable for acquiring competency in their performance, and assists students in re-mediation to acquire and maintain competence.

Motivates students through instructional and counseling activities toward high levels of contribution to the discipline. Conducts conferences with students concerning academic and clinical competence and progress.

Records and maintains data for student records, grades, accreditation, program compliance with Dental Hygiene Board of California Regulations and CODA accreditation standards and college requirements (i.e. test item banks, course evaluation portfolio, annual course reports, etc.).

Coordinates and manages the course implementation in consultation with members of the teaching team.

Effectively and Collegially work with other faculty and staff to meet program goals and objectives.

Participates in scholarship through teaching, application, and the integration, and discovery of knowledge.

Create and/or contribute to development of course curriculum as needed to maintain currency with professional and industry standards.

Participates in recruitment and retention programs.

Participates with faculty to develop and assess student learning outcomes. Uses the results to improve teaching and learning.

Participates in divisional and college governance activities through committee service and/or other appropriate activities.

Undertakes the divisional and professional responsibilities of a regular faculty member.

Participate in the recruitment, outreach, and development of internship opportunities for students.

PROFESSIONAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Ability to adapt varying pedagogical approaches to meet the needs of students with differing learning modalities and abilities

Knowledge of current practices in distance education including learning management systems such as Canvas

Experience with Student Learning Outcomes and assessment methods

Outstanding interpersonal skills and a desire and ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, students, and other members of the campus community

Ability to work in a multi-ethnic environment with students of varying academic preparation and learning styles

Knowledgeable about culturally sustaining pedagogical techniques and effective practices for engaging African American, Latinx, and Indigenous groups who are historically underrepresented and underserved

Recent experience working with minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education shapes patterns of participation and outcomes

Willingness to examine and remediate ones instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Experience and proficiency in current teaching and learning techniques

Familiarity with Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) Standards and the California Dental Practice Act

Awareness and experience with appropriate uses of technology in the teaching and learning of Dental Hygiene

Experience with equipment used in Dental offices, clinics and laboratories

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's Degree AND two (2) years of related occupational experience OR

An associate's degree AND six (6) years of related experience OR

The equivalent AND an unencumbered Dental Hygiene License with expanded functions issued by the Dental Hygiene Board of California OR

An unencumbered Dental license issued by the Dental Board of California

Degree must be shown as conferred on transcript. Some degrees may require equivalency. When equivalency is requested, the file will be reviewed by PCC's Equivalency Committee. It is the applicant's responsibility to provide ample documentation to support equivalent qualifications.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's Degree in any discipline

Completion of dental hygiene or Doctorate in Dentistry program approved by Commission on Dental Accreditation

3 years or greater clinical experience working as a dental hygienist or dentist in the last 5 years

Advanced certification Interim Therapeutic Restorations

Possess RDHAP licensure endorsement

Familiarity and/or experience in performing Interim Therapeutic Restorations

Experience in teaching ­­­­­­­­­ Dental Hygiene at the community college level to a diverse student body, the majority of which are traditionally underrepresented in the sciences

Demonstrated experience in developing lower division Dental Hygiene curriculum which uses established high impact practices to increase student success and completion

Experience in using student-centered and innovative pedagogies to teach and motivate students at all levels of college-readiness

Up-to-date experience and/or training in online instruction and knowledge of best practices in distance education

Experience using digital or electronic patient record systems

Willingness to work with and support students who are have diverse learning needs

Ability to teach through a variety of mechanisms to effectively instruct students

THE ASSIGNMENT:

Ten Months, 100% - Tenure-track position beginning August 2023
Thirty-four (34) hours per week consisting of a combination of in-class teaching and preparation for teaching; five and one half (5.5) hours of additional time for student conferences; and five and one half (5.5) hours for professional growth and development, College governance and other professional responsibilities. The College has two 16-week semesters and offers a full range of courses beginning at 7:00 a.m. and ending at 11:00 p.m. Faculty must be available to teach anytime within those hours. Faculty may be offered the opportunity to teach classes during winter and summer intersessions.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

• Successful completion of livescan clearance and TB screening

• Successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination.

• Proof of eligibility to work in the United States and signing of loyalty oath per government codes 3100-3109

• Meeting applicable eligibility requirements under CalPERS or CalSTRS if you are a current or former member
• Board of Trustees approval
