JOB DESCRIPTION:

Goucher College invites applications for an open rank (Assistant/Associate/Professor of Practice) professor position in Data Science within the Department of Computer Science and Data Science. The Data Science program offers a foundational Data Science curriculum complemented with interdisciplinary learning paths. Students can choose to study purely in data and computer sciences or specialize in another discipline such as economics, sociology, political science, or public health. Students choosing to specialize in another discipline apply data analysis, mathematical modeling, and computational techniques from courses such as Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to solve complex problems in that discipline. Future plans include expanding the Data Science curriculum with new specializations and adding a graduate degree program in the 2023-24 academic year.

The ideal candidate will have a terminal degree in a field focused on the application and analysis of data within a particular context, including the fields of data and computer science, statistics, the physical and social sciences, and public health. Candidates who can contribute to new specializations within Goucher's existing programs will be preferred.  Candidates must be capable of teaching existing Data Science courses at all curricular levels. Rank will be determined by the applicant's qualifications and prior experience.

Tenure-track faculty are expected to teach five courses per year (20 credits) and conduct ongoing scholarly research. In addition, active involvement in student advising, mentoring, and shared governance is expected as part of one's service to the college community. Tenure-track candidates must have a clearly articulated research program in Data Science that includes opportunities for undergraduate research. Professor of Practice positions are 3-year renewable opportunities with adjusted teaching, research, service, and salary requirements.

Goucher College endeavors to be a model teaching and learning community where faculty and students are engaged with one another in learning both inside and outside of the traditional classroom. Teaching is paramount. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to teaching students from diverse backgrounds and a dedication to engaged pedagogies that support equity, inclusivity, and student success. Application materials should clearly articulate how the candidate might contribute to the College's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion along with why the candidate is interested in teaching at a small liberal arts institution. Special consideration will be given to applicants whose teaching and research interests include applying data analysis to issues of social justice.
