Typical office hours are Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with occasional hours on evenings and weekend as needed to meet the needs of the department.

Position Summary:

This position will be responsible for the administration of the UNCA mission critical, enterprise, and some cases educational Linux/Unix systems. This position also acts as the administrator responsible for all backup systems for the core computing environment to include onsite and cloud-based backups. This position will customize, code, test, and debug operating systems, applications, and/or backup strategies. This position shall perform day-to-day administration activities related to user administration, package/patch management, DNS/DHCP administration, and work with departments to support applications running on our Linux/Unix systems.

This position will monitor the performance of the computer and network systems, review the impact of new applications on system performance, and consult with other administrators and analysts to forecast growth within the environment.

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or closely related degree from an appropriately accredited institution and 2-4 years of relevant experience, or a Master’s degree and 1-2 years of experience.

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills:

Three years of experience in Linux system management, preferably in a mixed platform (e.g. Enterprise Linux, Windows, Mac OS) environment.

Development experience in a Linux/UNIX environment using C, perl, and other shell scripting languages for both system and apache web application programming; understanding of various Internet protocols (especially TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, LDAP, Kerberos, NTP, SSL/TLS and SMTP); experience managing and working with VMware ESXi and other VMware virtualization products; experience with Veeam and Cirrus and strong plus.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

Ability to work with diverse constituencies of various technical abilities.

Ability to work independently and reliably to ensure projects meet time and resource constraints.

Ability to work as a team member and exhibit the ability to advance technical skills.

Ability to troubleshoot and independently provide solutions to problems.

Employee Work Locations and Reasonable Commuting Distance
Employees approved for flexible work locations are expected to work within a reasonable commuting distance to be able to report to their on-site duty station within a practical period of time when directed due to operational needs and/or due to changes to, or revocation of, their flexible work arrangements. A “reasonable commuting distance” generally means within two hours of the employee’s on-site work location. Exceptions may be made to the reasonable commuting distance based on operational needs, including but not limited to recruitment of those with unique or scarce skills and arrival or departure of employees for a transitional period of relocation. All such exceptions must have the written approval of the appropriate Senior Officer and Human Resources.
