1-year Visiting Assistant Professor of Classics

Location:
Waterville, ME
Open Date:
Jan 4, 2023
Description:

The Classics Department at Colby College has been authorized to offer a one-year position at the
Visiting Assistant Professor level, beginning September 1, 2023. We invite applications from
candidates capable of teaching with distinction courses in Latin at all undergraduate levels, as well as
courses on topics such as race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, ancient medicine and science.

Research specialization is open. Interdisciplinary approaches that expand the traditional boundaries
of Classics or explore contacts between Greece/Rome and other cultures of the ancient world are
particularly welcome. The search committee is especially interested in candidates who, through their
research, teaching, advising, and/or service, will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the
campus community, and have a record of success mentoring individuals from groups under-
represented in higher education. The ability to teach a large lecture class will also be welcome.

The teaching load is 4 courses per year. Ph.D. by date of appointment is strongly preferred.

Application Instructions:

● a cover letter detailing your preparation for inclusive teaching at a diverse liberal arts college,
and briefly describing a course in translation you would like to teach
● a curriculum vitae
● a writing sample
● a teaching dossier via Interfolio
● names and contact information for three references (we will not contact references until a
later stage of the search process but please ensure that your references are prepared to
submit a letter on your behalf)

The teaching dossier should include a statement of teaching philosophy documenting a commitment
to the value of diversity and experience with inclusive teaching, and complete sets of course
evaluations from a selection of representative courses. Candidates are welcome but not required to
include a syllabus for a course in translation.

N.B. We plan to conduct initial interviews remotely in March. Applications received by February 15
will receive full consideration but review will continue until the position is filled. Address all
inquiries to Kerill O’Neill, Search Committee Chair (knoneill@colby.edu).
