Description:

The Bard College Controller’s Office is seeking a self-motivated business professional to support the Controller and Assistant Controller in carrying out responsibilities of the Finance/Accounting Department.

The ideal candidate should have strong organizational and interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with others. The candidate should be able to identify and participate in problem resolution. This position handles confidential information. This is a full-time, exempt position, reporting to the Controller. The successful candidate will excel at working in a community that is broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation and religion.

Essential Duties

  • Responds to information requests related to fiscal administration     
  • Prepares reports and responses to external information and data compliance requirements
  • Monitors/reconciles general ledger accounts and performs variance analyses on general ledger accounts
  • Prepares, processes and records financial and budget journal entries
  • Prepares financial and statutory reports
  • Ensures that all banking transactions, including receipts, payments and inter-account fund transfers, are recorded accurately and in a timely manner
  • Participates in the monthly closing schedule, including account analyses and balance sheet reconciliations
  • Prepares year-end schedules for annual audits and assists with special projects
  • Conducts periodic audits of petty cash boxes and proper reconciliation
  • Reconciles balance sheet accounts
  • Helps to provide documentation and support during the annual audit process
  • Prepares and submits the annual NYS abandoned property reporting
  • Monitors Business Office email and follows up with appropriate departments
  • Participates in research and special projects as assigned
  • Budget analysis, program review analysis, and assisting in budget holding liaising
  • All other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or related field required
  • 2+ years of experience required, experience in not-for-profit or higher education setting preferred
  • General knowledge of GAAP
  • MS Office Suite proficiency
  • Banner experience (preferred)
  • Highly skilled in use of Excel spreadsheets
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to work as a member of a team, especially when under deadline
  • Prior fund accounting experience (preferred)
  • Must be highly skilled in dealing with financial/numeric data and exhibit accuracy and strong attention to detail

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time and work in standard office environment
  • Must be able to occasionally lift 20 pounds
  • Must be able to work occasional weekends and evenings as needed

Undergraduate Degrees

Bard offers courses of study in four divisions—Arts; Languages and Literature; Science, Mathematics, and Computing; and Social Studies—and in interdivisional programs and concentrations. More than 200 students are seeking graduate degrees: M.A. in curatorial studies, M.Music in vocal arts, conducting, and curatorial, critical, and performance studies, and M.S. in environmental policy, climate science and policy, and economic theory and policy at the Annandale campus; M.F.A. and M.A.T. at multiple campuses; M.B.A. in Sustainability in New York City; and M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. in the decorative arts, design history, and material culture at the Bard Graduate Center in Manhattan. M.Music degrees are also offered at the Longy School of Music of Bard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Cultural Life

Campus life in Annandale is vibrant, with world-class performing arts venues; continuous and varied student activities; and numerous cultural and recreational opportunities in the surrounding historic Hudson River Valley and in New York City. Students choose from more than a hundred active clubs on campus, and new clubs begin every semester. The Bard College athletic teams are the Raptors. The College’s colors are red and white. The critically acclaimed Bard Music Festival is presented on campus each summer, exploring the life and work of a single composer through chamber music, choral and orchestral performances, symposia, panel discussions, and preconcert talks. Since 2003 the festival has been part of Bard SummerScape, which annually presents operas, films, and theatrical productions that complement the festival’s theme.

Outstanding Faculty

Bard's undergraduate faculty-to-student ratio is 1:10 and courses are taught by full faculty members. Among the many distinguished faculty at Bard College are five MacArthur Fellows—poets John Ashbery and Ann Lauterbach, novelist and memoirist Norman Manea, painter and multimedia artist Judy Pfaff, and journalist Mark Danner. Other notable faculty members include soprano Dawn Upshaw, journalist Ian Buruma, composers Joan Tower and George Tsontakis, poet Robert Kelly, and writers Luc Sante and Francine Prose.
