The candidate will also be an ally and champion for equity, inside and outside of the classroom and teaches to ensure all students succeed.

Position:

Under the general supervision of the Division Dean, the Computer Science instructor’s responsibilities include teaching Computer Science courses, overseeing the Computer Science curriculum, and mentoring new faculty, part-time instructors and embedded tutors. The position includes teaching Computer Science courses, all current Computer Science course offerings and future course offerings as needed to support student needs in academic and career success, in a range of modalities including face-to-face, hybrid, or online. The Computer Science Instructor will be responsible for teaching lower division Computer Science courses in Computer Science. Additional responsibilities will include mentoring faculty and students along with continual exploration in learner-focused pedagogical practices. The instructor will be expected to work in a classroom incorporating hands-on, interactive, and group activities, as well as integrating in-person, synchronous and asynchronous computer-based lab activities. Productive engagement in division and campus-wide activities is required. The instructor may be required to have part of their teaching assignment in the evening and/or weekends, and teach courses in-person at the Fremont and/or Newark campuses, online via synchronous and asynchronous distance learning, and/or at an off-campus location.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Teach assigned courses in the Computer Science department, and employ learner-centered instructional methods that emphasize group cooperation and collaboration and that reflect cultural sensitivity and interdisciplinary approaches to subject matter.
  2. Teach Computer Science in accordance with post-secondary level established course outlines.
  3. Understand the importance of holding oneself accountable as educators for closing equity gaps and engaging in equitable practices.
  4. Effectively engage and support historically minoritized groups by addressing issues of equity and improving culturally responsive service-oriented practices.
  5. Initiate and enhance institutional and teaching practices and aim to create a culturally responsive and equity driven teaching environment.
  6. Evaluate student work using clear criteria relevant to the course content and student learning outcomes and provide feedback to students in a timely manner.
  7. Assist students with their assignments by holding required office hours and attend department/division meetings.
  8. Develop and implement a variety of effective teaching and assessment methods including the use of computers and information technology to engage student interest and support for a variety of learning styles.
  9. Develop effective online course materials, and build online learning communities that meet accessible online course requirements and Title 5 §55211 Effective Contact Policy requirements.
  10. Participate in the leadership of discipline specific learning communities.
  11. Maintain and submit accurate records according to published deadlines (i.e., grades, syllabi, attendance reports).
  12. Participate in the development, implementation, evaluation, and revision of curriculum as well as assess student-learning outcomes at the course and program levels.
  13. Continue in related professional career development throughout employment and remain current in the field through course work, conferences, workshops and other appropriate means.
  14. Carry out collegial responsibilities including, but not limited to, institutional committee assignments, student recruitment and retention, and participation in shared governance and campus life activities.
  15. Teach through positive race-consciousness and embracing human difference.
  16. Strategically build support and participation among colleagues for equity-related initiatives.
  17. Create an equity-based and welcoming classroom environment.
  18. Communicate and work cooperatively with colleagues (within discipline and college-wide) on matters regarding course offerings, programs, and activities that would enhance the development of the department and college.
  19. Perform duties described in Board policy, the Faculty Handbook, the United Faculty of Ohlone (faculty bargaining unit) contract, and as assigned at the Fremont and Newark campuses, online via the eCampus, and/or other designated locations.
  20. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Demonstrated interest/passion in helping students build a solid foundation of lower-division Computer Science skills and knowledge.
  2. In-person teaching experience in Computer Science at the post-secondary level, especially in the introductory, lower-division courses. High School experience may be helpful if no post-secondary experience.
  3. Experience in using innovative teaching methods that encourage student engagement and learning, especially in students who may have been previously marginalized.
  4. Experience developing, adjusting, and teaching courses to meet transfer requirements and other student needs even as these requirements and needs change over time.
  5. Experience creating socially conscious syllabi, equitable classroom materials and inclusive pedagogical practices to promote an inclusive environment.
  6. Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity; recent experience working with Asian-American, African American, Latinx, Native American, and other minoritized students and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusions of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes; willingness to examine and remediate one’s relational practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students.
  7. A commitment to participatory governance, consensus building, and team approach to management.
  8. Experience in the use of computer technology as a teaching tool, including experience with course management systems (i.e. Blackboard, Canvas, etc.).
  9. Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  10. Ability to work successfully in a team environment.

Salary Range:

Starting Salary: $74,189.00 - $113,558.00 Annually (initial placement determined per faculty contract)

This is a regular probationary, tenure track, faculty position commencing Fall Semester 2023. The appointee is expected to work 40 hours per week and all duties must be performed on campus. The work year is 175 days. The District participates in a group health plan and offers a variety of medical plans. Dental is offered through Delta Dental, Vision is offered through Vision Service Plan (VSP), and Life insurance through Unum.
Medical: Enrollment in medical coverage through the District is optional. For faculty that choose to enroll in one of the offered medical plans, the District currently provides an allowance of $1,200 per month to offset the cost of the premium.
Dental, Vision and Life Insurances: The District provides for and fully pays the dental and vision premiums for the employee and eligible family members, and the employee premium for life insurance. Enrollment in dental, vision and life insurances are mandatory.
Retirement: Ohlone participates in the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS) and the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS). Candidates hired on or after January1, 2013, are subject to restrictions imposed by the Public Employees’ Pension Reform Act (PEPRA).
Long-Term Disability (LTD): The District provides for and fully pays long-term disability premiums for the employee.
Employee Assistance Program (EAP): The District provides for and fully pays the employee assistance program premiums for the employee and eligible family members.
Sick Leave: One day per month, accumulating indefinitely, if unused. All other Education Code leave benefits apply.
Sabbatical Leave: After 6 consecutive years of employment with the District, faculty are eligible to apply for sabbatical leave. Faculty receive 100% pay for one semester leave and 70% for an academic year.
Enrollment Fee Waiver: Employees and their eligible family members receive an enrollment fee waiver for Ohlone College classes.
Other employee paid benefits (optional): Voluntary additional life insurance;Section 125 Flexible Medical and Dependent Care spending plans; 403(b) and 457 Tax Shelter Annuity plans.
