Painting Instructor (2 Positions)

Pasadena City College is hiring two full-time, tenure-track Art Instructors (Painting) commencing with the 2023-24 academic year. Ten months, 100% - Tenure-track position beginning August 2023.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PAINTING INSTRUCTOR:

Participate in professional development activities that support best practices for teaching a diverse population of both major and non-major students

Participate in the evaluation, revision, and development of the curriculum

Participate in the recruitment, outreach, and development of internship opportunities for students

Participate with faculty to develop and assess student learning outcomes. Use the results to improve teaching and learning

Undertake the divisional and professional responsibilities of a regular faculty member

Participate in divisional and college governance activities through committee service and/or other appropriate activities

Teach classes in painting including introductory courses

PROFESSIONAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Personal work as an artist showing investment in painting.

Demonstrated working knowledge in trends of painting, techniques, methods and practices related to one's area of specialization.

Currently practicing artist with an active record of professional achievement as demonstrated by the following: exhibitions, professional practice, publications, grants, or other scholarship

Actively engaged in contemporary art and with experience/ knowledge in art history

Willingness and ability to help develop new curriculum for painting and program development

Experience and proficiency in current teaching and learning technologies

Willingness to work with and support basic skills students

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Outstanding interpersonal skills and a desire and ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, students, and other members of the campus community

Knowledge of safety relevant to the management of a painting studio, including materials handling and storage, ventilation, waste disposal, and any other practices you believe are important

Ability to adapt varying pedagogical approaches to meet the needs of students with differing learning modalities and abilities

Knowledge of current practices in distance education including learning management systems such as Canvas

Experience with Student Learning Outcomes and assessment methods

Outstanding interpersonal skills and a desire and ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, students, and other members of the campus community

Ability to work in a multi-ethnic environment with students of varying academic preparation and learning styles

Knowledgeable about culturally sustaining pedagogical techniques and effective practices for engaging African American, Latinx, and Indigenous groups who are historically underrepresented and underserved

Recent experience working with minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education shapes patterns of participation and outcomes

Willingness to examine and remediate ones instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Experience and proficiency in current teaching and learning techniques

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's in fine arts, art, or art history

OR

Bachelor's in any of the above

AND

Master's in humanities

OR

The equivalent

NOTE: Master's in fine arts as used here refers to any master's degree in the subject matter of fine arts, which is defined to include visual studio arts such as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, textiles, and metal and jewelry art; and also art education and art therapy. It does not refer to the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree when that degree is based on specialization in performing arts or dance, film, video, photography, creative writing or other nonplastic arts.

Degree must be shown as conferred on transcript. Some degrees may require equivalency. When equivalency is requested, the file will be reviewed by PCC's Equivalency Committee. It is the applicant's responsibility to provide ample documentation to support equivalent qualifications.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Earned MA or LFA in Studio Arts

Two years college-level teaching experience

10 examples of student work from any classes you've taught at any level (hyperlink to a publicly viewable Google slideshow)

THE ASSIGNMENT:Ten Months, 100% - Tenure-track position beginning August 2023.CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Successful completion of livescan clearance and TB screening

Successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination.

Proof of eligibility to work in the United States and signing of loyalty oath per government codes 3100-3109

Meeting applicable eligibility requirements under CalPERS or CalSTRS if you are a current or former member

Board of Trustees approval
