The Institute for Management & Innovation (IMI) and the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) invite applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of urban public policy. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an expected start date of July 1, 2023 or shortly thereafter. This will be a joint appointment between IMI (51%) and the Department of Political Science (49%) at UTM.

Candidates must have earned a PhD in political science, urban studies, public policy, or a related field by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths in IMI and the Department of Political Science. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. We are seeking candidates with an expertise in urban public policy; urban political economy, equity and sustainability; the politics of labour market policy for urban economies; and/or comparative urban politics. Preference will be given to candidates that have a record of community engagement, applied professional experience, and some teaching in a professional degree program.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence and an active, innovative, and creative research program that focuses on urban public policy and urban politics. Research excellence can be demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals or a research pipeline that is at high international levels, the quality of the representative sample of publications submitted as part of the application, presentations at national and international conferences, recognition for innovative work, strong endorsements from referees of high international standing, and a research statement.

The successful candidate will teach in the Master of Urban Innovation (MUI) program at IMI, UTM, as well as the undergraduate Political Science program at UTM and the graduate program in Political Science at the University of Toronto. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier to include a teaching statement, teaching evaluations and representative course materials submitted as part of the application, a demonstrated commitment to practice-based and experiential learning, as well as strong letters of reference. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to building IMI’s strong culture of professional graduate education and experiential, practice-based and applied learning. Overall, the successful candidate’s research and teaching expertise will align with MUI’s goals, including training our students to develop a deeper understanding of the critical connections between urban innovation, urban politics and governance, the challenge of achieving equitable and inclusive growth, and avoiding the pitfalls of precarious employment in innovation-driven urban economies.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Institute for Management & Innovation (IMI) is a platform for inter- and transdisciplinary research and scholarship focused in the area of innovations of human, social, and organizational processes and transformational leadership. IMI’s faculty are world class scholars from a wide range of disciplines, including management, political science, economics, planning, geography, and chemistry. IMI is home to UTM’s professional graduate and undergraduate education programs, which aim to develop innovation-focused leaders who will contribute to creating a more sustainable world. IMI’s interdisciplinary programs blend business, natural/physical sciences, and social sciences, and are distinctive in their focus on experiential and applied learning. IMI faculty members contribute to graduate programs including: Master of Forensic Accounting (MFAcc); Master of Management of Innovation (MMI); Master of Management & Professional Accounting (MMPA); Master of Science in Sustainability Management (MScSM); Master of Biotechnology; and Master of Urban Innovation (MUI); and undergraduate programs including: Minor in Business, Science, and Entrepreneurship, and the Certificate in Global Sustainability. IMI is home to UTM’s business incubator, the ICUBE, and delivers impactful executive education programs through IMIx, including the Urban Leadership Exchange (ULX).

The Master of Urban Innovation (MUI) is IMI’s newest professional degree program, which focuses on urban economic development, community capacity building, innovation management, local and regional governance, and the social sustainability of urban economies. This graduate degree program aligns with the current programs offered at IMI, maintaining a focus on management, innovation and sustainability and incorporates the research and teaching strengths from UTM Departments of Political Science, Geography, Geomatics and Environment, Management and Economics.

The successful candidate will also hold a graduate faculty appointment in the tri-campus Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto, a department with strengths and interdisciplinary linkages in Canadian Politics, Public Policy, International Relations, Comparative Politics and Political Theory. Active participation and student supervision in the graduate program of the Department of Political Science is expected.
