General Summary of Position:

The Associate Director, Technology Commercialization and Venture Development is responsible for the development and implementation of strategy and initiatives that will serve to advance the commercialization of innovation and technologies created by UML faculty, and to support the entrepreneurial culture and programs at the university.

The Associate Director is responsible for designing and implementing a support system that will increase the number of start-ups based on innovations created at UML. This includes leading the I-Corps program, the River Hawk Venture Fund, the UML Entrepreneur in Residence program, and engaging with a local network of entrepreneurs and investors.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

Education and Experience:

  • Masters in Business Administration (as well as a Bachelor’s degree) in a technical field plus 4 years or relevant experience
    However, will consider candidates without the advanced degree but with a Bachelors in a Science or Technology field and 10+ years relevant experience

Skills:

  • Expertise in business/financial planning of start-ups and demonstrated access to local/national networks of entrepreneurs and investment communities
  • Experience in evaluating commercial potential of early-stage technologies, as well as understanding of business models, and business/financial planning for start-ups
  • Ability to communicate effectively – to present ideas, both in writing and orally to technical and non-technical audiences and internal and external constituencies
  • Ability to work effectively on multiple projects and initiatives, across a matrix of stakeholders
  • Must be U.S. Citizen or green card holder

Additional Considerations:

  • Broad understanding of industry and investment community trends, and knowledge/connections to resources for funding, e.g., government, Angels, Venture Capital, etc.
  • Experience in managing an investment fund focused on early-stage companies and technologies
  • Demonstrated experience in advising and mentoring faculty entrepreneurs’ with establishing early-stage startups
