Department of Pediatrics, Section of Hematology, Oncology, and Bone Marrow Transplant has an opening for a full-time Open Rank: Assistant or Associate Professor - BMT position.

Nature of Work:

The Section of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/Blood and Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapeutics (BMT-CT) is seeking applicants with a dedicated interest in the care of children and young adults undergoing hematopoietic cell transplantation or cellular therapy for both malignant and non-malignant diseases. The successful applicant will work with other attending physicians on the Pediatric BMT-Cellular therapy service in the supervision of advance practice providers, fellows, and residents in organizing each day's inpatient rounds, procedures, and family conferences. The schedule is designed so that there is dedicated time for academic activity in Clinical or Translational BMT-CT research. Applicants with an emerging and/or established body of research, as evidenced by a track record of publications and/or external funding will be given priority. In this role, you will have approximately 20% of your time spent conducting clinical/translational research and 80% of your time spent as a faculty member practicing clinical Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant-Cell Therapy independently in the inpatient and outpatient settings, although alternative effort distributions may be arranged if external funding supports it.

Examples of Work Performed:

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
  • Provide independent care of pediatric BMT-CT patients on the inpatient hospital service.
  • Provide independent care of pediatric BMT-CT patients in the outpatient clinic and infusion center.
  • Communicate with referring physicians regarding shared patients on BMT-CT service.
  • Lead BMT advance practice providers (APPs: physician assistants and nurse practitioners) in the care of both inpatients and outpatients.
  • Provide education and supervision to medical, nursing and other students, residents, and fellows in the inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Oversee and prepare admission, discharge, acute care, and chemotherapy orders in collaboration with other physicians and advanced practice providers.
  • Provide coordination of care between the inpatient and outpatient settings including interactions with nursing and pharmacy colleagues.
  • Participate in the treatment of patients on clinical research protocols.
  • Coordinate multi-disciplinary care with other hospital and outpatient services.
  • Coordinate and assist with education of new patients and families.
  • Participate in Quality/Safety, Process Improvement Initiatives.
  • Conduct investigator-initiated research studies in pediatric bone marrow transplantation including. evolving cellular and/or gene therapy approaches.
  • Provide educational support to residents, fellows, nursing, support staff and other learners.
  • Perform procedures independently:
  • Lumbar punctures with or without intrathecal chemotherapy administration
  • Bone marrow aspirations/biopsies
  • Skin or simple tissue biopsies
  • Bone marrow harvests
  • This position will also have shared holiday, weekend and night call responsibilities with other faculty members.

  • Salary and Benefits:

    The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at:
      Assistant Professor: $163,000 - $181,000 Associate Professor: $230,000 - $250,000

    Qualifications
    Minimum Qualifications

    Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

    Assistant Professor:
    • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO); must be board certified/eligible in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. Continuous Maintenance of Certification is required.
    • Active Colorado state license and DEA certification or ability to obtain
    • Training and expertise in pediatric Hematology, Oncology and/or BMT-CT; Minimum 1 year of professional experience in clinical setting.
    • Meet all Children's Hospital Colorado credentialing requirements and continuous active medical staff status.

    Associate Professor:
    • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO); must be board certified/eligible in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. Continuous Maintenance of Certification is required.
    • Active Colorado state license and DEA certification or ability to obtain
    • Training and expertise in pediatric Hematology, Oncology and/or BMT-CT; Minimum 6 years of professional experience in clinical setting.
    • Meet all Children's Hospital Colorado credentialing requirements and continuous active medical staff status.

    Conditions of Employment
    • Must successfully pass a drug test through Children's Hospital Colorado.
    • Must be willing and able to pass a national criminal background check.
    • Continuous Maintenance of Board Certification(s).
    • Meet all Children's Hospital Colorado credentialing requirements and continuous active medical staff status.
    • Maintain a current Colorado State Medical License and DEA certification.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Ability to independently care for and manage complex Pediatric BMT patients in an academic setting.
    • High customer service skills, team-based patient care, and ability to meet productivity targets are expected.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • At least 2 years of experience in the independent care and management of pediatric hematology/oncology/BMT-CT patients.
    • Pediatric BMT-CT subspecialty/fellowship training at a high volume academic medical center is strongly preferred (can substitute for one year of experience listed above).
    • Record of sustained independent funding of clinical research or translational/laboratory work, with preference given to candidates who have secured at least one cycle of renewed funding if greater than 20% protected research time is to be included in this position.
