The Opportunity:

Join the faculty of the University of Florida as an Adjunct Instructor for an exciting and unique opportunity to influence and prepare the next generation of bilingual digital journalists. The College of Journalism and Communications seeks to find a Spanish-bilingual industry professional to work in the applied learning environment of the WUFT Innovation News Center (INC). Your teaching will be through professional practice in UF's student immersion experience of the INC not a traditional classroom lecture environment.

This part-time, non-tenure track appointment is funded with a mission to provide more equitable access to diverse and marginalized communities that have been historically underrepresented in the news industry. This position requires a commitment to working with diverse student and community populations.

Basic Instructor Expectations:

As an Adjunct Instructor, you'll work side-by-side in the INC with students during 16-week fall and spring semesters with an emphasis on producing multimedia digital content in both English and Spanish.

The ideal candidate will be able to:
  • Work a 4-hour shift (to be determined, based on candidate's other commitments) Monday-Friday to teach, train, coach oversee student output.
  • Proactively engage with students during shift through meaningful assignments to report and produce multimedia digital content on deadline including fundamentals of headline writing, copy editing, fact-checking, search engine optimization, social media best practices, and audience engagement/social media analytics.
  • Provide coaching, feedback, mentorship to students that will help them develop the skills necessary to successfully transition to the workforce.
  • Foster a positive learning environment that engages students in a professional and respectful manner.
  • Reply to staff and student inquiries within 24 hours.

The Innovation News Center (INC) is a state-of-the-art professional newsroom at the University of Florida (UF) College of Journalism and Communications (CJC), which is one of the top communication programs in the country. The INC, home of the College's news, weather and sports operations, is a two-story, 14,000-square-foot facility providing hands-on learning opportunities for more than 400 students each semester. Students work alongside professionals to produce and edit content for seven media properties and companion digital platforms, including the local NPR, PBS and ESPN affiliates, as well as the Spanish-language news operation of Noticias and the Fresh Take Florida news service. Expected Salary:

$3,300 per course; commensurate with experience

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or communications and
  • 3 years professional experience as a digital content producer or related experience.
  • Must be fully bilingual and able to copy edit in Spanish.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Working knowledge of WordPress or similar CMS, Adobe Creative Cloud including Audition and Premiere Pro.
  • Experience working with young adults, new professionals, or interns
  • Experience in navigating in and covering diverse populations
