TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full-time, tenure-line appointment beginning August 2023.


Central College in Pella, IA, is seeking an Assistant Professor of Communication Studies. The responsibilities for this position include the potential for teaching introduction to communication, communication theory, communication research and writing, and/or public relations in addition to developing and teaching upper level courses in strategic communication (e.g., public relations, social media, digital strategy, persuasion, social movement campaigns, and/or advocacy.) Additionally, the position will be expected to participate in curriculum development and be able to teach the College's first year or senior -year interdisciplinary seminar; participate in institutional service and leadership; and engage in professional development. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in curriculum development and be able to teach the College's first year or senior-year interdisciplinary seminar. In addition to teaching, all faculty at Central College are expected to participate in the life of the college and to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to professional development.


The Communication Studies Department provides students with a broad-based exposure to the process of creating messages, meaning and relationships in a broad array of contexts. In an effort to cultivate critical thinking, clear writing, articulate speaking and proficiency with digital media, our students study communication within a variety of contexts, particularly those related to media citizenship, civic responsibility, professional engagement, and personal relationships. Through a combination of theoretical grounding and applied experience, we prepare our majors for a range of careers, enable them to participate productively in a democratic culture and instill in them a desire for life-long learning. This position represents a new area of emphasis for the department. The faculty in the department and across the Central campus interact in an academically stimulating and congenial environment with a focus on student success. 100% of communication studies majors complete at least one internship and two-thirds participate in one of Central's off-campus domestic or international semester programs.
