The Department of Film, Video, Animation and New Genres is widely known for its success in teaching innovative, artist-driven filmmaking and media production. As a result, we have produced a remarkable, successful set of alumni—people who are active at high levels in all sectors of contemporary media production. The department currently supports over 500 undergraduate students enrolled in our BFA in Film, Animation BA and Film Minor. Our MFA in Cinematic Arts supports as many as twelve interdisciplinary graduate students at a time.

The UWM Peck School of the Arts is one of the largest and most comprehensive arts schools in the region. It has over 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students and offers degree programs in Art & Design, Dance, Film, Music, and Theatre. The UWM campus is located on the east side of Milwaukee less than a mile from Lake Michigan. The university community enjoys both the cultural and employment advantages of a large city and the pleasant surroundings of a residential neighborhood.

Job Summary
The Department of Film, Video, Animation and New Genres seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Film/Video with an expected start date of Fall 2023. We are looking for a person who has dexterity across a range of media with significant experience in various modes of production, including but not limited to narrative, non-fiction, radical and experimental practices. An MFA or equivalent in film / video production or related field is required. Candidates should demonstrate an active practice, a dynamic exhibition record, as well as a recognized or growing profile as a video- and/or filmmaker. By the start date of the position, the successful candidate must also demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching the creative, critical, and aesthetic study of film and media in all its forms.

We will consider candidates from a wide range of specializations. Artistic practices may include directing, screenwriting, documentary, personal and essayistic film, and other forms of contemporary moving image. These specializations are defined in the broadest sense, as we seek to hire an artist-practitioner and educator who is committed to a range of methods and to film as an evolving artform.

The Film Department is seeking a filmmaker and educator who can lead students through all aspects of film/video production, from concept development to final output. Teaching responsibilities will include introductory, intermediate, and upper-level undergraduate courses across various modes of production. Candidates may also interface with graduate students and serve on the graduate faculty. Evidence of college-level teaching is required.

Minimum Qualifications
Applicants for this position must have or provide evidence of the following:
  • MFA degree or equivalent in arts-related field;
  • A record of exhibition and involvement in artistic and/or filmmaking communities;
  • University teaching experience.


Preferred Qualifications
Highly qualified applicants for this position will also provide evidence of the following:
  • at least two years teaching experience at the university level;
  • a significant record of artistic accomplishment and ongoing creative research;
  • a commitment to diversity and equity in pedagogy
