Job Description
The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences and the Center for Advanced Research Training & Innovation (CARTI) at the University of Maryland School of Medicine are recruiting for a Scientific Writer and Communication Specialist. This position is a full-time faculty position reporting directly to the Center Director and the SOM Dean Emeritus. Responsibilities include assisting in grant and journal article writing as well as preparing presentations, remarks, and other communications. The Scientific Writer & Communication Specialist teaches seminars on scientific writing and communication.

The expected rank for this position will be Assistant Professor or higher. Final rank and tenure status will be commensurate with the selected candidate’s experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    Assists the SOM Dean Emeritus in completing scientific grant applications, manuscripts, and presentations, book chapters, etc. Researches and produces material for the SOM Dean Emeritus that includes medical/scientific publications, remarks and talking points, questions and answers, presentations, materials, and general communication. Collaborates with members of the CARTI leadership team to develop medical and scientific communications including writing, editing, and contributing to the enhancement of the publications, faculty development activities, and external communications. Teaches seminars for CARTI on scientific communication. Exercises editorial judgment and maintains trust and confidence when drafting correspondence and messages on behalf of senior leadership. Ensures that correspondence is accurate and reflects the senior leader’s voice and style.
    Coordinates and organizes occasional conferences, meetings, and committees. Keeps current on relevant issues related to policy issues that should be reflected in or referenced in communications.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    Ability to create communications that are in synergy with the SOM Dean Emeritus’s vision and voice for style and content. Ability to develop effective medical and scientific communications with respect to style, organization, and structure, and breadth of subject matter using correct language, communications strategies, and techniques. Superior understanding of the principles and practices of effective writing, editing, proofreading, and reporting in medical and scientific communication content creation. Ability to interact with other members of the CARTI and SOM senior leadership, and with internal and external partners. Able to manage multiple projects in fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Ability to operate quickly, effectively, and diplomatically with a diverse range of internal and external partners, and to craft coherent medical and scientific narratives. Ability to work discretely on sensitive and confidential assignments and maintain the trust and confidence of the senior leadership.

    Candidates must have a Ph.D. degree in life sciences, healthcare, or related fields Two to four years of experience preferably in medical and scientific communications (equivalent experience will be considered) At least two years previous scientific/academic, and/or healthcare experience.
