Position Summary: Serve as central point of contact and support in all efforts to engage students in sustainability efforts on campus and integrate sustainability across the curricula of the college. Engagement efforts include: conference, fundraiser and awareness week planning; delivering guest lectures; group and class tours; and organization and oversight of the Student Sustainability Committee. Educational efforts include: developing, facilitating and promoting the Sunflower Project for sustainability curriculum development and integration; cataloging and assessing the college's collective sustainability education efforts through the development and implementation of an internal assessment rubric and national reporting methods. Substantial understanding of disciplinary curriculum and independent decision making in working with faculty and students on sustainability issues is required of the position holder. Coordinate the campuses' triennial AASHE STARS submission with other Center for Sustainability/college staff.

Required Qualifications:
  • Adept communication skills, adaptable to a variety of audiences
  • Superb organizational skills
  • Master's degree in social or environmental sciences, sustainability studies or related area, or equivalent job experience (min. 5 years).

  • Job experience in higher education, teaching, curriculum development, or event planning

    Position Details: Job duties include but are not limited to:
    • % - 1. PROMOTE THE INTEGRATION OF SUSTAINABILITY ACROSS THE COLLEGE CURRICULUM - Facilitate the Sunflower Project award and support program for sustainability curriculum development and integration by working with faculty across campus. Pursue ways to align and promote interdisciplinary efforts through assessment, learning outcomes, and other opportunities as identified. Continue to enhance sustainability education efforts through departmental outreach, student survey data and increased awareness of course offerings. Performance is acceptable when: a. Sustainability education at JCCC continues toward institutional alignment b. New faculty and/or divisions/departments take part in the Sunflower Project. c. Faculty are supported in their course and project development as needed. - (Essential)
    • % - 2. DEVELOP, PLAN AND CARRYOUT CAMPUS SUSTAINABILITY OUTREACH EVENTS, BOTH ANNUAL AND NEW - Coordinate and execute all aspects of outreach events such as fundraising dinners, student conferences, seasonal sustainability awareness weeks, as well as other event opportunities or partnerships that may arise. Develop promotional materials and circulate communications for and about events. Performance is acceptable when: a. Annual events - as they continue to meet the department's outreach goals - are carried out with maintained or increased attendance, interest and/or response. b. New or partnered events are explored and piloted where new opportunities arise. - (Essential)
    • % - 3. ORGANIZE AND ADVISE THE STUDENT SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE - Recruit and maintain membership of the 13-member student advisory committee to the department. Schedule bi-weekly meetings, set and circulate agenda, maintain detailed budgetary documents for the Sustainability Initiatives Fund. Pursue and coordinate approved projects as applicable. Coordinate relevant field trips and travel for committee. Performance is acceptable when: a. Student committee membership is diverse, consistent and engaged. b. Meeting documents/budget are up-to-date/ transparent to members/stakeholders. c. Committee approved projects are completed and showcased. - (Essential)
    • % - 4. SERVE AS A PRIMARY OUTREACH AND COMMUNICATIONS LIAISON TO THE STUDENT BODY AS WELL AS GREATER JOHNSON COUNTY COMMUNITY - Accommodate requests for classroom lectures on campus initiatives and other sustainability topics; conduct project tours for campus classes and outside groups; work with JCCC communications and media departments to promote campus initiatives on and off campus through educational videos, media interviews, press releases, website articles, etc.; update and maintain website content as pertains to student opportunities, involvement, curriculum and other projects as needed. Mentor students in regard to coursework and academic or career interests in sustainability. Coordinate the biannual AASHE STARS review process. Performance is acceptable when: a. Classroom lectures and campus tours continue to be offered and utilized to convey sustainability at JCCC to both the campus and community at large. b. Website content in regard to students, events and curriculum is current and organized. c. Internal communications are exercised to raise awareness of department efforts. d. STARS submissions are accurate and on-time. - (Essential)

    Working at Johnson County Community College

    With more than 34,000 students enrolled in credit and continuing education classes each semester, Johnson County Community College is the state's third largest institution of higher education and the largest of its 19 community colleges.

    JCCC offers a full range of undergraduate credit courses that form the first two years of most college curricula. The college has more than 100 transfer agreements with area colleges and universities that ensure admittance to specific programs such as business, engineering and education. JCCC students are able to begin their first two years of a four-year degree program here and complete that degree on schedule.

    In addition, more than 50 one- and two-year career and certificate programs prepare students to enter the job market in high-employment fields. The college maintains extensive student support services such as computer labs, math labs, a writing center and a learning center.

    JCCC’s continuing education program is the largest, most comprehensive in the Kansas City area. Through the Center for Business and Technology, participants can take courses in management and computer application or seminars and workshops that lead to professional certification and licensure. Personal enrichment classes, on topics ranging from gardening to money management, are also offered, while nationally and internationally performing and visual artists appear in the performance spaces and Gallery of Art in JCCC’s Carlsen Center.

    The campus, centrally located in the county on 234 acres, opened in 1972. There are 18 major buildings on campus. Currently under construction are the Regnier Center and the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art.

    JCCC’s full-time faculty and staff numbers about 875. Another 1,800 people work as adjunct faculty or part-time staff. Most faculty members have master’s degrees, and many have or are earning doctorates.

    JCCC returns about $2.70 to the community for every tax dollar it collects. The college's total tangible economic impact on the community is more than $182 million annually.
