JOB SUMMARY

The Department of Student Activities (DSA) at the University of Connecticut announces the opening of a full-time Assistant Director of Leadership and Organizational Development. This position works under the direction of the Director of Leadership and Organizational Development (LOD) and develops and delivers programs and services related to student involvement in the Leadership and Organizational Development area. This position supervises the Coordinator of LOD’s Student Organization Support area and up to three Graduate Assistants, in addition to having responsibility for other programmatic offerings within the area, and works to collaboratively provide intentional and consistent programs, advisement, and support to all staff, students and programs in the LOD area as needed.

Leadership and Organizational Development’s mission is to provide intentional, challenging, and educational experiences that are inclusive, adaptive, and accessible. We aim to empower individuals and groups to elevate their leadership identities and strengthen active membership in their communities. LOD offers a full portfolio of high-quality leadership development programs and services – focusing on individual knowledge and development, group/organizational leadership, and community-based leadership. Offering non- and for-credit offerings our programs are based on leadership theory and apply multiple instructional formats (e.g. classes, workshops, outdoor and experiential opportunities, and one-on-one advisement).

The Department of Student Activities offer a diverse and exciting portfolio of educational, social, and recreational programs for the entire campus. The related programs and services reach from the classroom and residence halls to the sidelines and beyond and engage students with unique programs and initiatives defined by their quality, creativity, and effectiveness.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Associate Director of Student Activities/Director of the Leadership and Organizational Development, this position will:

    Hire, train, and supervise the Coordinator for Student Organization Support and Leadership.Be responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive, intentionally structured, pedagogically sound student organization advisement model.Be responsible for the oversight, coordination, and implementation of various leadership development programs and major events.Develop and facilitate customized educational workshops, seminars, and retreats.Direct the recruitment and selection process for student leadership development experiences, scholarships, and award programs.Act on behalf of the Director of Leadership and Organizational Development as appropriate.Coordinate the appearance of prospective speakers and presenters in support of related programs.Serve as the Assistant Director of the Leadership Learning Community providing advisement and programmatic support as needed.Provide additional facilitated experiences for the University, Division, Department, and Area as needed.Hire, train, supervise, and support students (undergraduates and graduates).Establish collaborative relationships with University colleagues and external vendors/partners.Provide on-site supervision of events/programs.Assist in the preparation and monitoring of budgets and expenditures.Be responsible for providing, supporting, and participating in programs, services, and initiatives focusing on anti-racism, social justice, and the fostering of a campus community that is more diverse, equitable, and inclusive to all.Identify, recommend, and implement improvements related to policies, procedures, and operations of programs and services.Assist in the collection and analysis of program evaluation/assessment data.Serve on University/Department committees.Assist and/or be responsible for assigned special projects.Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor’s degree and at least six years of related experience (at least two years of experience serving as an advanced/senior team member or working as a project lead) OR a Master’s degree and at least four years of related experience.
  2. Knowledge of/experience applying/presenting student development theory and leadership development content.
  3. Experience advising and/or supervising college students.
  4. Demonstrated knowledge of budgeting and fiscal management.
  5. Articulated commitment to, demonstrated understanding of, and/or experience working with diverse populations.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Master’s degree in student affairs, student counseling, or another related field.
  2. Experience serving as a supervisor to graduate or professional staff.
  3. Training/certification in MBTI, StrengthsQuest, and/or other similar personality assessment instruments.
  4. Demonstrated experience integrating principles of diversity and inclusion into all aspects of program management.
  5. Experience/ability to conduct program evaluations and assessments.
  6. Experience fostering/building relationships with community and campus partners.
  7. Experience presenting information effectively to various constituent groups.
APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time position based on the UConn Storrs campus and includes some nights and weekends. The University offers outstanding benefits, including employee and dependent tuition waivers at UConn, and a highly desirable work environment. The anticipated salary is $68,658 to $69,000. A telecommuting and/or a hybrid work schedule may be possible subject to authorization and University policy. Other rights, terms, and conditions of employment are contained in the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Connecticut and the University of Connecticut Professional Employees Association (UCPEA).
