The University of Washington Tacoma invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor of U.S. History and Labor Studies position with an emphasis on working-class, and social justice movements in the nineteenth, twentieth, and/or twenty-first centuries.  Positive factors for consideration include, but are not limited to, a record of teaching and research that emphasizes race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, social class and/or intersectionality, and the ability to teach methods courses in History and EGL.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a strong research agenda, teach economically and ethnically diverse students, and participate as a member of both the History and Ethnic, Gender and Labor Studies majors in the Division of Social and Historical Studies, housed in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences. They will be expected to teach U.S. history surveys and Introduction to Labor Studies courses.

The successful candidate will be expected to support diverse student populations through inclusive teaching practices and integrate effective pedagogical techniques and technologies into teaching/learning. They will also be expected to engage in institutional, professional, and community service.

At the University of Washington, Tacoma, Tenure-track faculty teach six classes per year on a nine-month (three quarters) schedule, combining lower-level introductory courses with upper-level courses in their areas of specialty.  This full-time tenure track position with a 9-month service period is scheduled to begin September 2023.

The Tacoma campus of the University of Washington was founded in 1990 with an interdisciplinary approach at its foundation. It has evolved into a thriving downtown campus that serves students of a wide variety of ages and backgrounds in the South Puget Sound. Faculty have access to the resources of the University of Washington, a major research university, including an extensive library system, but work and teach within a small campus setting. The base salary range for this position will be $8,222-$8,926 per month ($74,000-$80,340 per 9-month academic year), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Other compensation associated with this position may include a one-time relocation allowance, if applicable. Qualifications

This position requires an earned PhD (or foreign equivalent) in history, sociology, political science, American studies and/or related fields at the time of appointment. Candidates in the final stages of their dissertation may be appointed on an acting basis.
