Job Description:


Basic Function and Responsibilities:


Under general supervision, direct the operational activities and provide instructional support services in the Biology and Chemistry student Laboratories.



Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Interview, hire, train and supervise student employees as they prepare labs for biology courses such as human anatomy and physiology, general biology, microbiology, and non-majors biology and chemistry courses such as non-majors' chemistry, general chemistry, and organic chemistry.
  • Train and supervise PT staff laboratory Technician.
  • Review experimental procedures and equipment with lab instructors as necessary, and demonstrate procedures during student make-up labs and assist as needed.
  • Assist in coordinating BIOLOGY and CHEMISTRY lab schedules and preparation guidelines for experiments.
  • Initiate and supervise the maintenance and repair of lab equipment and instruments and initiate requests for supervise routine repairs of lab facilities, e.g., drains, faucets, safety equipment etc in consultation with Science Lab Manager.
  • Order chemical supplies and maintain chemistry lab equipment in consultation with Science lab Manager of CHM.
  • Maintain the safety, security and cleanliness of assigned Oakton laboratory facilities including during holidays and break periods.
  • Collect, organize and remove chemical wastes from the labs to a designated area. Maintain a list of chemical wastes. Maintain an inventory of CHM and BIO supplies.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.



Requirements:


Qualifications and Working Conditions:


  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Biology or related fields or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired is necessary.
  • Two years related Chemistry laboratory experience is required.
  • Two years supervisory experience is desirable.
  • Ability to interact professionally and tactfully with people of different levels of education, cultural backgrounds, and life experiences, and to exhibit an adequate level of respect to fellow employees and the College community at large.

Physical Demands:


Light lifting up to 30 lbs. and light carrying up to 30 lbs. Ability to reach above shoulder. Periods of time spent sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, bending and stooping. Mobility to move from building to building on-Campus and to visit off-Campus entities. Employees may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals.



Additional Information:


Supervision Received:


Administrative supervision is received from the Division Dean of STEM. Functional supervision may be received from Program Chair, and/or designated faculty member and Science Lab Manager of BIO, Science Lab Manager of CHM.


Supervision Exercised:


Functional supervision is exercised over Science Lab Technician and approximately 4-6 student employees.


SALARY: $50,839


HOURS: Monday - Friday 8:15 am - 5:00 pm Hours may be flexible due to the needs to the department


Based on the needs of the college and with Administrator approval, some positions at the college may have hybrid schedule options available after 30 working days.
