POSITION:Dean of the Conway Medical Center College of Health and Human Performance
INSTITUTION:Coastal Carolina University is a public comprehensive liberal arts institution located in Conway, South Carolina, just nine miles from the Atlantic coastal resort city of Myrtle Beach. Coastal Carolina University enrolls over 10,000 students from 45 states and 58 nations. The University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the baccalaureate and selective master’s degrees of national and regional significance in the arts, sciences, business, humanities, education, and health and human services, a specialist degree in educational leadership, and PhD degrees in marine science and education.The Conway Medical Center College of Health and Human Performance is CCU’s newest college, which officially began operations in July 2022. The CMC College is organized into three academic departments: exercise and sport science, health sciences, and recreation and sport management. These departments currently offer five undergraduate degree programs to approximately 1500 students, including B.S. degrees in Exercise and Sport Science, Public Health, Recreation and Sport Management, and Nursing, and a B.A. degree in Health Administration. The College also offers a Master of Science in Sport Management and has new degree programs under review. The College also supports auxiliary and outreach programs including Army ROTC, the Physically Active Living Skills (PALS) program, the Community Fitness Testing Program, and the Swain Scholars program. The College houses a number of laboratory and dedicated physical activity spaces to support student learning and faculty/student research. The CMC College’s programs are currently accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) and the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH).For more information, please visit www.coastal.edu and www.coastal.edu/cmcchhp.
REPORTS/RELATIONSHIPS:This position will report directly to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Dean will oversee 83 full-and part-time faculty and nine staff members.
BASIC FUNCTIONS:The Dean is administratively responsible for planning, organizing, budgeting, coordinating, directing, and evaluating the instructional, research, scholarly, and service activities of the College. The Dean is also expected to take an active leadership role in recruiting and retaining faculty, staff, and students, and to represent the needs and interests of the College to the University and the greater community. This is an opportunity to determine the direction of a new college as a founding dean, develop new programs, influence the design of new facilities, and build new and emerging relationships with external partners.
Specific duties will include, but are not necessarily limited to:· Exercising strategic and operational academic leadership in teaching, research, and other activities of the College with a leadership style characterized by innovation, transparency, and professional integrity.· Inspiring a culture of collegiality, characterized by cooperation, creativity, and respect among faculty, students, administrators, and staff.· Providing leadership and working with University leadership to coordinate activities that build and maintain a diverse and inclusive faculty, staff, and student population, and support equitable treatment of faculty in teaching, research, and service.· Recruiting, managing, mentoring, developing, and retaining faculty and other personnel; encouraging and monitoring the professional development of faculty and staff; providing direction to and evaluation of the tenure process.· Leading faculty in assessing needs and viability of new academic programs that align with the mission of the college; ensuring regular evaluation of the curriculum and student needs.· Supporting the overall commitment to student success in the college, including activities related to recruiting, enrollment growth, and student retention while maintaining or increasing academic standards.· Engaging the community to identify and develop opportunities for classroom engagement, internships, and other extracurricular opportunities for students.· Developing new and emerging external partnerships and initiatives that support the budgetary/fiscal health of the College; working collaboratively with a newly established Board of Visitors to develop external partnerships and relationships.· Working collaboratively with the Office of Advancement and Alumni Relations to establish and cultivate an active and engaged group of donors; supporting the development efforts of the Coastal Education Foundation.· Engaging in outreach activities to maintain collegial relationships with alumni and external constituencies.· Providing leadership to develop new and modern facilities and infrastructure that support and promote synergistic and collaborative laboratory and community-based research within and across College units.· Functioning as the spokesperson for the College, articulating the College’s positioning, value proposition, and process of maintaining relevance within a fluid job market.· Developing a budget to be approved by the Provost; subsequently administering the budget.· Performing other duties as assigned by the Provost.


REQUIREMENTS:· At least five years of progressive responsibility with achievements in administrative positions, including Department Chair, Center Director, and/or Associate Dean.· Experience in overseeing the hiring and retention of diverse faculty and staff, including the handling of personnel issues, faculty development, promotion, and evaluation processes.· Experience in promoting and overseeing research units that include laboratory, community, and experiential programs related to health and human performance.
· Experience in developing innovative academic programs and delivery methods that advance and support the mission of the University and College.

· Documented record of community outreach leading to successful fundraising and experience in increasing external funds.


· Demonstrable commitment to the promotion of diversity-related initiatives for faculty, staff, and students.

· An earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degree in a field represented in the College.


· Academic qualifications that merit appointment as a tenured full professor in a college-related academic discipline.


COMPENSATION:Compensation will be commensurate with experience including a competitive base salary and competitive benefits package.
