The position will be located on the main University of Missouri campus in Columbia, MO in the Division of Plant Science and Technology. The successful candidate will have a 9-month appointment with a 40% Research, 40% Teaching, and 20% Service appointment.

The research program of this position is expected to focus on digital agriculture technologies, including precision agriculture, with applications to farm machinery, robotics, or big data for Midwest cropping systems. All elements of crop production (planting, pest management, irrigation, harvest, etc.) and post-harvest processing (e.g., grain handling) will be considered. Ability to secure extramural funding and publish research findings is required. The candidate is expected to develop a funded research program in specific areas related to digital agriculture and assist in transferring technology through collaborative work with extension professionals.  

Teaching responsibilities will include participation in courses for the Precision Agriculture Teaching Certificate, and/or contributions to the Agricultural Systems Technology (AST) program depending upon candidate’s expertise. This might include electrical and power (hydraulic, pneumatic) systems for Ag machinery as well as precision agriculture, data science in agriculture, or artificial intelligence applications. The successful candidate will also develop a new course emphasizing novel technologies in digital agriculture. The training and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students are expected. The candidate should be able to use modern instructional technology and develop effective teaching strategies for both face-to-face and online learning. The candidate must also be able to work in a multicultural setting and create an environment that fosters collegiality, diversity, and teamwork.

The successful candidate may also be considered as the Coordinator for the AST program. In that role, the coordinator would ensure the development of degree program goals through the following:  enhancement of undergraduate and graduate recruitment and education through curriculum development and strengthening relationships with diverse stakeholder groups through the AST Advisory Board.  The successful candidate will also be expected to participate in student-related extracurricular activities and relevant academic committees.

Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in Engineering (Agricultural, Biological systems, Mechanical or related), Agricultural Systems Management/Technology or a closely related field.

Candidates will be evaluated on: Prior teaching and research experience; strong research program in novel farming technologies, such as digital agriculture, precision agriculture, robotic machinery, sensor technologies, or artificial intelligence applications; potential to secure extramural funding; teaching experience in precision agriculture or agricultural systems technology; strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education and training.

Salary: Commensurate with experience and qualifications.
