Brandeis University invites applications for a two-year, non-renewable Florence Levy Kay Fellowship in Racial Justice, Education, and the Carceral State, beginning Fall 2023. This scholar could come from one of a number of disciplines within the social sciences, including but not limited to sociology, economics, education, ethnic studies, political science, psychology, public policy, law, urban studies, or anthropology. The scholar would focus their research and teaching on the ways educational and carceral institutions intersect to generate systems of racial inequality in a landscape shaped by housing segregation and metropolitan inequality. We are particularly interested in scholars investigating how racism is institutionalized in educational and disciplinary systems that lead to, or perpetuate, racial disparities in: educational attainment, access to higher education, labor market outcomes, income and wealth, civic engagement, and involvement with the justice system. A strong candidate for this Kay Fellow position might conduct research on: cradle to prison pipelines; opportunity gaps; education for justice-involved youth; racial disparities in school discipline policy and practice; the impact of neighborhood-based trauma on educational experience; and/or restorative justice approaches.
Through their research, teaching, and the cultivation of service learning opportunities, the Kay Fellow could also support the Brandeis Educational Justice Initiative (BEJI), a new multidisciplinary initiative focused on providing opportunities for students to create educational pathways to individuals impacted by incarceration. In addition to its co-curricular activities, BEJI is creating a hub for multidisciplinary research on issues associated with prisons, criminal justice reform, and reentry.
Kay Fellowships are interdisciplinary appointments. The Kay Fellow in Racial Justice, Education, and the Carceral State will hold a joint appointment as a faculty member at the rank of lecturer in the Education Program and the Program in Legal Studies.
The Kay Fellow will teach one course per semester and actively pursue their own research interests. The Fellow will receive a 2023-2024 salary of $62,000, plus benefits, with moving expenses (around $1,500), and a research fund of up to $4,000 per year. PhD should be in hand by the commencement of the fellowship.
