Details:  This position is a twelve (12) month non-tenure track special appointment with the University of North Dakota (UND) School of Medicine & Health Sciences (SMHS), Center for Rural Health.  Academic appointment is with the Department of Population Health.

Department

The Center for Rural Health (CRH) connects resources and knowledge to strengthen the health of people in rural communities. The Center is located at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Grand Forks. For over 40 years, we have worked with the public and private sectors expanding a circle of partners to develop creative solutions to critical health issues.  Our approach is multi-disciplinary, as we create solutions to complex challenges.  The Center for Rural Health works with communities, healthcare organizations, healthcare providers, policy-makers, researchers, tribal nations, and rural health stakeholders.   Much of our research is based on collaborative models with an emphasis on community-based participatory research with an effort to build local capacity in research and service implementation.

Job Summary The Center for Rural Health, (CRH), UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences is seeking to fill the position of Research Assistant Professor (non-tenure). The successful candidate should understand and have experience with rural health including the environmental context shaping it (conditions, trends, solutions) along with the dynamics of rural communities. The CRH in its over 40-year history has determined that a rural health system and population health do not exist in isolation from the broader community and to improve rural health one needs to be cognizant of its relationship with the community. With that understanding, a successful candidate would be expected to contribute to the work of CRH community development/engagement programs such as the State Office of Rural Health, Medicare Rural Hospital Flexibility program, Health Workforce development, and other areas.  Much of CRH research is based on collaborative models with an emphasis on participatory research which can in turn build a level of local capacity in a research and service implementation process. Thus, there is a need for health services research experience and skills that align to provide direct application to benefit not only our academic understanding of rural health (contribute to the literature), but also community-focused health services (research that can improve system operations and population health).

Duties & ResponsibilitiesThe ideal candidate for this position will have the education, skills, talent, and experience to achieve the following:

Obtain grant funding for research and community development projects with priority to initiatives addressing rural health (including population health, health equity, and health care delivery).Serve as lead investigator in the planning, organizing, and implementation of research on rural health related topics utilizing research methodologies and techniques in collection and analysis, and reporting of data, results, and interpretations primarily in rural health topic areas.Plan, direct, and coordinate activities of designated grants/projects to ensure that goals and objectives of the project are accomplished within prescribed time frames and funding parameters.Work with rural communities, rural health systems, and rural health stakeholders on health research and project development.Actively participate in program development and collaborate with faculty and staff in the development of relevant research projects. Develop linkages between CRH research/evaluation efforts with community development activities fostering collaboration. Work together with other agencies and departments in the development of interdisciplinary research teams. Publish journal articles and additional research products as relevant in peer reviewed journals. Work with existing programs and staff in the department to train and assist teams through the journal publication process to increase capacity. Actively participate in information dissemination including newsletter articles, in-house publications, posters, and oral presentations pertaining to research efforts. Participate in sponsored workshops and conferences to present research findings.Serve with other department members, school of medicine faculty, and university colleagues on committees and participate in other campus community opportunities. As requested, assist with other teaching activities that may include lectures to students and. serve on thesis and dissertation committees. Be an active and productive member of the School of Medicine & Health Science and the University faculty.

Minimum Requirements

Ph.D. in public administration, public health, health services research, health policy, sociology, cultural anthropology, nursing, educational research, or health economics. Will consider other Ph.D. with related qualifications and experience. Minimum one year experience in quantitative data management, research methodologies, and utilization of statistical programs including SPSS or similar.Successful completion of criminal history record check

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge and experience conducting community based participatory research, especially with vulnerable populations or rural communities. Demonstrated expertise in working with rural communities in health equity.Knowledge and experience in grant program management, grant writing, and records of obtaining grant funding.Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills in English.Experience disseminating information and presenting information to diverse audiences. Publication record in the areas of rural health and/or health equity.
