JOB SUMMARY

SUNY Sullivan is seeking to fill the full-time, tenure-track position of Chef/Culinary Arts Instructor for a tenure-track appointment in the Catskill Hospitality Institute beginning Fall 2023. Applicants should have knowledge of the production of food and bakery items with a quality standard for commercial outlets, the whole food lifecycle from farm to table, utilization of our on-campus organic farm, safe and sanitary commercial kitchen procedures, and a passion for food education and hospitality. The applicant should possess 5-10 years of experience in the food and beverage industries. Previous teaching experience in an academic or institutional setting is required. Catskill Hospitality Institute courses are taught on campus, in person.

Responsibilities:

The ideal candidate will be a culinary expert committed to both the art of cooking and innovative teaching grounded in sustainable food practices. The candidate’s insights on integrating locally grown and produced food into private, institutional, and professional menus so as to offer creative, nutritious and healthful eating options will inspire students and the community to make thoughtful connections between farm production, food processing, artisanal products and cuisine. Responsibilities include:

  • Supervise students in preparing quality food and provide regular and constructive feedback in a timely and consistent manner
  • Prepare and present lesson plans based on the agreed-upon curriculum
  • Evaluate and assess students on the course learning outcomes
  • Provide advisory services for students seeking extra help and career guidance
  • Monitor attendance policies, uniforms, hygiene, and overall wellness
  • Assume responsibility for equipment and facilities of the kitchens and classrooms
  • Practice community involvement, serve on college committees, and welcome and inform visitors with hospitality to aid in the college’s growth

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A minimum of five years of culinary industry experience and a culinary-arts-related Associate’s degree
  • Previous experience in a teaching/training environment
  • Familiarity with basic fundamental cooking methods and advanced culinary skills
  • Strength and comfort with local and seasonal sourcing practices
  • Basic computer literacy
  • Flexible schedule to accommodate class schedules
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
